Former NHL enforcer is trying MMA in June

On skates, Donald Brashear could always fight with the best of them.
Can he do it bare-footed and against trained professional fighters? Brashear wants to find out.
According to the Canadian Press, the former NHL henchman, who's still playing hockey in the minors, has signed a deal with Ringside MMA to fight in June in Quebec City.
"Despite Brashear's lack of experience in MMA, he's a very athletic guy, he's in good shape, he's gutsy, he's learning pretty fast and showed an early interest and motivation," a Ringside MMA spokeswoman said. "Plus, he's no stranger to fighting."
Keep in mind, Brashear is also 39 years old. The 6-foot-3, 237-pounder will have to get approval from local authories before he steps into the cage.
Brashear may want to look at MMA sparring videos with another former NHL player George Laraque. Sure he was facing one of the best in the world, but Laraque was schooled a few months ago by Georges St-Pierre.
We're guessing the biggest test for Brashear will be conditioning and avoiding the potential adrenaline dump that happens in fighting. Baltimore Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski, who's crossed over to professional boxing, said fighting is unlike any conventional sport.
"You have to control it in boxing, because in football maybe that first series you get real excited. The warm up in boxing is far, far more important than in football," Zbikowski told ESPN1100 in Las Vegas.
During his 17-year career, Brashear piled up 2,634 penalty minutes in 1,025 NHL games.

Donald Trump: Fighting with Obama & Letterman

Trading barbs as he immerses himself in the political arena, Donald Trump was on both the firing and receiving end of public tiffs with David Letterman and President Barack Obama over the past twenty-four hours.
The "Apprentice" mogul continued his belittling of the U.S. Commander-In-Chief during an event in Nevada on Thursday (April 28) in which he called Obama "stupid".
Trump told the Las Vegas casino audience, ?Our leaders are stupid, they are stupid people. It?s just very, very sad.?
All of the negative banter seemed to get under the skin of late night talk show host David Letterman, who insinuated that Donald is a "racist" while chatting with his latest guest, Dr. Phil.
?It?s all fun, it?s all a circus, it?s all a rodeo ? until it starts to smack of racism," Letterman told. Then asking Dr. Phil if he considers Trump a racist, the do-good doctor said, ?I do not,? while adding that the self-proclaimed billionaire lacks the quality of thinking before speaking.
Seemingly not in agreement, Letterman then said, ?If he comes back on this show, and I am not sure we want him back on this show under these circumstances, he ought to be prepared to apologize just for that kind of behavior.?

Mann Dominates, M'Pumbu and Hale Advance at Bellator 42

by Michael David SmithIn an exciting if overlooked Saturday night fight card, Ronnie Mann put on an impressive showing in his Bellator Fighting Championships debut, while Richard Hale and Christian M'Pumbu advanced to the light heavyweight tournament final at Bellator 42.

Mann spent three rounds brutalizing an overmatched Josh Arocho, winning a unanimous decision in which one judge awarded him a shocking (but not completely unreasonable) 30-25 victory, while the other two judges gave him the more conventional 30-27 scores. The British Mann was making his Bellator debut, and he was confident and aggressive, displaying great positional control and violent ground and pound. Mann, who improved his professional MMA record to 19-2-1, showed that he's going to be a force to be reckoned with in Bellator's featherweight division, although he's going to have to beat much better opponents than Arocho, whose record fell to 6-10. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Lady Gaga Says 'Judas' Video 'Celebrates Faith'

' 'Judas' is a metaphor and an analogy about forgiveness and betrayal,' Gaga says of song and video.By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga

Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images

Next week, fans will finally get to see Lady Gaga's "Judas" video, when it premieres during "American Idol." But while we wait, Gaga opened up about the video in a recent interview, giving fans a better sense of what they might see in the clip.
"Well, the video, in essence, suggests that forgiveness and betrayal are hand in hand," she told MSN Entertainment in Canada. "The video puts destiny above all things and postures that the mistakes in your life are in fact not mistakes at all, they are just part of your overarching potential and your destiny."
Though she didn't want to give away the full concept, Gaga did describe the clip's biblical and cultural references. "Well, I want to allow the video to speak for itself, but I will say that the theme of the video and the way that I wanted to aesthetically portray the story was as a motorcycle Fellini movie, where the apostles are revolutionaries in a modern-day Jerusalem. And I play Mary Magdalene, leading them into the town where we meet Jesus, and I will leave the rest for you to see," she teased further about the video, which she co-directed with Laurieann Gibson. "But it's meant more to celebrate faith than it is to challenge it."
While there has been some debate about the song's use of religious icons, Gaga said she doesn't mean for it to be a direct interpretation of Bible stories. "Well, I wouldn't necessarily say that my schooling [in Catholic school] informed the songwriting on that record in particular. 'Judas' is a metaphor and an analogy about forgiveness and betrayal and things that haunt you in your life, and how I believe that it's the darkness in your life that ultimately shines and illuminates the greater light that you have upon you," she said.
"Someone once said to me, 'If you have no shadows then you're not standing in the light.' So the song is about washing the feet of both good and evil, and understanding and forgiving the demons from your past in order to move into the greatness of your future," she continued. "I just like really aggressive metaphors — harder, thicker, darker — and my fans do as well. So it is a very challenging and aggressive metaphor, but it is a metaphor."
Gaga said that Born This Way will be more about the religion of pop culture than anything taught in Sunday school.
"Well, I'm fascinated with iconography, and I'm fascinated with the way that iconography is taught in terms of education to the world, whether it be through institutionalized religion or through symbolism or through movies or through music," she said.
"In a lot of ways it's about faith and hope, but not in the religious sense," she added. "It's about faith and hope in culture, especially in a time all over the world where many are in need of hope, in need of understanding, in need of love, in need of lack of prejudice, in need of no judgment, in need of acceptance. How can we look to culture for faith?"

The Troubles With Fuel Limits, Part 1: The Perfect Storm at Estoril, 2010

(This is the first installment in a, as yet undetermined-length, series examining the available data for the 800cc era MotoGP seasons to date: 2007-2010. )

New Rules in 2010, The Storm's Pre-cursors:

As the 2009 MotoGP season came to a close, the prelude to the longer-life engine rules had been put into place. The teams came to Valencia with 2010-specification engines for the post-race test. Each team, essentially, began with the same premise to make their 6 allotted engines last the entire season: cut RPM. As a consequence of the introduction of the 21-liter fuel limit in 2007, all of the teams struggled with methods for maximizing power and control under braking while limiting consumption. A de facto rev-limit would serve, in a small way, to bring a little more fuel into usable powerbands. However, Ducati arrived with a parallel strategy; an uneven-firing "long bang" motor. Both of their riders strongly preferred the feel and power delivery of this engine, so it became the center of development plans for the 2010 season.read more

Lady Gaga To Donate $1 Million For Homeless Youth

Charity will be announced at Robin Hood Foundation benefit concert.

Lady Gaga

Photo: Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic

Do you want to help Lady Gaga give away $1 million dollars to charity? Well, little monsters, here's your chance! Mother Monster is hooking up with the Robin Hood Foundation to help homeless youth in New York, her hometown.
Fans can go to Gaga's Facebook page to weigh in on which organization — The Door, Hetrick-Martin Institute, Lawyers for Children, Safe Horizon or SCO Family of Services — will be gifted the sum ($500,000 a year over two years).
The results will be announced May 9 at a special concert benefiting Robin Hood. "I'm thrilled to be working with the Robin Hood Foundation to distribute funds to help the youth of New York City," Gaga said in a statement. "NYC is my hometown and I think investing in these kids' future will go a long way."
Days before Gaga attends the Robin Hood gala, her HBO special will air. While it is a concert special, it also serves as a love letter to the Big Apple. Shot during her time in New York for two tour stops at Madison Square Garden earlier this year, the documentary shows the singer opening up about her love for the city and how it helped shape her as an artist.
"There was never a question in my mind that I was gonna make it and that this is my destiny and that we were all gonna make it as the kids of this city, as the New York generation," she says, driving through the streets of New York to MSG. "My faith in my creativity and my artistry has nothing to do with making it," she continued. "We kind of had already made it when we were playing for nothing downtown. ... We still felt like we were superstars."
Which organization do you hope Gaga's money goes to? Sound off below!

UFC 132: Mayhem Miller vs. Aaron Simpson

by Michael David Smith

Jason "Mayhem" Miller's return to the Octagon will take place in July, as he battles Aaron Simpson at UFC 132. The UFC announced the Miller-Simpson fight on Saturday, a day after Miller's signing with the UFC was confirmed.

There's no word yet on whether Miller-Simpson will be on the pay-per-view card, but it would be an ideal fight for a Spike TV preliminary bout. Thanks to his brash personality and his status as host of MTV's Bully Beatdown, Miller was one of the most famous mixed martial artists outside the UFC, and his presence on a basic-cable bout would draw some eyeballs and likely reel in some casual fans to make a last-minute pay-per-view purchase. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sachsenring MotoGP Round "Safe", But Contract Haggling Continues

The news emerging from MotoGP contract negotiations recently has not been promising. The Brno circuit is asking for money from the national government to help support the Czech Grand Prix, the Jerez circuit saga continues, with debts still unpaid to the contractors Serviobras and FCC who carried out construction work, and the Sachsenring circuit has still not secured an extension of its contract with Dorna to host the German Grand Prix from next year.

But things may not be as bleak as they seem, at least not as far as the Sachsenring circuit is concerned. After reports, relayed here, from the regional arm of the German tabloid Bild that the Sachsenring could lose the German Grand Prix, the German-language motorsports magazine Speedweek did some further digging into the matter. What their investigations turned up was much better news: according to veteran GP reporter Gunther Wiesinger, the chances of the Sachsenring not hosting the German MotoGP round are as good as zero. Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta told Wiesinger that the two parties involved - Dorna and the ADAC, the German equivalent of the Automobile Association that organize the event and own the Sachsenring circuit - were certain to find a solution. "I do not see a problem for the future of the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring," Ezpeleta told Wiesinger.

Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple

In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It's not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal -- but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn't matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia's creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 05:25:00 EST. Roger Cohen, New York TimesW.B. Yeats, the Irish poet, had a theory of history that centered on the movement of gyres. It was a confused and mystical idea that inspired some great lyrical verse, so the confusion doesn’t really matter. Ne-Yo Defends Beyonce 'Dis' Statements

'I'm tired of being nice to dumb people. ... Bottom line, Beyonce is my friend,' 'Irreplaceable' songwriter tweets.By Jocelyn Vena

Ne-Yo

Photo: Mawuse Ziegbe/ MTV News

When a comment from Ne-Yo hit the Internet in which the songwriter said that he wished he could have kept the Beyoncé hit "Irreplaceable" for himself, some took it as a dis to the star.
"One song that I gave away and didn't want to, but it's actually a good thing that I did, is Beyonce's 'Irreplaceable'. I honestly wrote that song for myself, but that song taught me a very interesting lesson: Many women don't think that differently. ... However, a man singing it comes across a little bit misogynistic, a little bit mean," Ne-Yo, who wrote the song, said in an interview.
When it was implied on Twitter that Ne-Yo was dissing the Sasha Fierce star with his comments, the singer/songwriter defended himself. "Aiight my dude. Send me the link to where I said ANYTHING disrespectful about Beyonce, PLEASE! Dying to hear this," he wrote. "Just heard the audio where I supposedly dissed Beyonce. ARE Y'ALL SERIOUS!?! Did y'all even listen to what I said!?!"
Ne-Yo then continued to tweet his anger toward those who misunderstood what he said. "I said I originally wrote the song for me. That's true, so OF COURSE I didn't want to give it away originally. IT WAS FOR ME," he wrote. "Once I realized how the song comes across if sung by a guy, that's when I decided to give it away. HOW IS THAT DISSING BEYONCE!?! She took the song and made it a smash, NOBODY can deny that ...
"You know what? At first I was apologetic about what the hacker said, now that I've heard the audio myself, not so much," he continued. "Y'all should listen a lil' harder before you start dissin' people. Makes you look real dumb. I'm tired of being nice to dumb people. ... Bottom line, Beyonce is my friend. To HELL with anybody that ain't SMART enough to understand what I truly meant."

Video analysis: Diaz or Daley? Who will be with UFC in 2012?

With some of their behavior in and out of the cage, they've both painted themselves into a corner . But in the end, it's their chops that probably landed both Nick Diaz and Paul Daley in a position where the UFC told them to go bye-bye. In a strange twist, both will be collecting a check tomorrow night from Zuffa, their old boss, as they square in the main event of Strikeforce in San Diego (Showtime 10 p.m. ET/PT).
Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to talk about the sins of the past and what mistakes may turn out to be most easily forgiven.
Who has a better shot at securing a long future with the UFC - Daley or Diaz? Or maybe the answer is neither and they might be just fine with that.

Adblock Plus developer pokes holes in Mozilla's new add-on performance tests

Wladimir Palant, developer of the most popular add-on in the world, Adblock Plus, is also an active contributor to the Planet Mozilla blog community. Over the last few days, in response to Mozilla's new name and shame list of slow add-ons, Palant has been investigating whether Mozilla's testing methods are actually accurate.

Rather surprisingly, it turns out that Mozilla's numbers could be significantly wrong -- and if they're not wrong, the factors that Mozilla uses to tabulate an add-ons final score should definitely be made more transparent.

In the first set of tests, Palant shows that FlashGot's position in the top 10 is probably due to a fault in Mozilla's testing setup, and that add-ons can perform very differently depending on which operating system they're being tested on. In the second analysis, Palant uncovers an irregularity that doesn't seem to have an obvious cause -- but it could be due to an I/O bottleneck on Mozilla's test machines. Basically, even though performance testing of Read It Later is disabled because of a bug, it still (somehow!) manages to record a 14% slow-down on Windows 7.

Palant concludes both analyses by scolding Mozilla for going public with the performance data before its testing methods had been confirmed accurate. It definitely looks like Mozilla has been more than a little reckless, considering the importance of Firefox's add-on ecosystem.Adblock Plus developer pokes holes in Mozilla's new add-on performance tests originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 08 Apr 2011 05:20:00 EST. Allow app installs from 'unknown sources'

There comes a time in every Android user's life where you want to install an app not found in the Android Market. If it's your first time, you're greeted with, "For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from the Android Market" message as you try to install. But how do we get there? To allow app installs from non-Market apps, tap the menu button on your home screen, then choose Settings >> Applications >> Unknown sources. Who are these "Unknown sources," and what do they want? Simply put, it's anything other than the Android Market. Could be an app sent by e-mail. Or downloaded from a website. If you're worried about the security implications of allowing unknown sources, there's an easy fix -- install the app from outside the Android Market, and then hit the checkbox again to turn them back off. If you're on an AT&T phone, you won't have this option, but Android Central's got you covered. Head on over to our very own Sideload Wonder Machine on the forums to get your non-Market install on.Allow app installs from 'unknown sources' posted originally by Android CentralSponsored by Android Cases and Accessories

Google's Blogger platform adds five new HTML5 Dynamic Views

Google, as part of its ongoing and much-needed overhaul of its popular Blogger platform, has just enabled five dynamic, HTML5ish, AJAXy 'Dynamic Views'. There's a video introducing the new layouts after the break.

The five new views provide fresh and interesting ways to explore your favorite Blogger blogs. The Mosaic view, for example, creates a wall of thumbnails -- click one, and it zooms to fill the screen; click it again and it minimizes. Flipcard is similar to Mosaic, but not quite as eclectic. Sidebar, Timeslide and Snapshot round off the new views, with each one obviously targeted at different types of content, from photo blogs, to text-only philosophy blogs, and everything in between.

For now, you have to visit a Blogger blog and add /view to the URL to enable the new Dynamic Views. If you own a Blogger blog, you can disable the new views -- and really, why weren't they disabled by default?

If feedback is positive -- which we're sure it will be -- these Dynamic Views will soon be enabled by default. You'll also be able to edit the views in much the same way as current Blogger templates.Continue reading Google's Blogger platform adds five new HTML5 Dynamic ViewsGoogle's Blogger platform adds five new HTML5 Dynamic Views originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 10:15:00 EST. Slow Buzz Builds For Low-Alcohol Wines

We hear a lot about "balance" these days; finding work-life balance or balancing the budget. Now, a group of vintners are trying to find balance in wine. They are making pinot noirs with less alcohol content, which they believe brings out the best flavors. Host Liane Hansen talks with Jamie Kutch, owner of Kutch Wines, about the increasingly popular selections of reduced-alcohol wines.

Best Buy has the exclusive launch of the WiFi only, 7-inch HTC Flyer tablet covered, and now they've announced their pre-sale date as being April 24. If you simply must have the HTC Sense-loving, 1.5GHz-powered Flyer, then you'll want to hit up Best Buy on that date and let them know you are more then willing to give them $499 in exchange for one. Young Money President Mack Maine Plans New Label

Still-untitled imprint will be under the Cash Money umbrella.By Rob Markman

Birdman's Cash Money and Lil Wayne's Young Money labels haven't been shy about signing new talent and releasing music. After dropping debut albums from both Drake and Nicki Minaj in 2010, YMCMB have artists Tyga, Lil Twist, Cory Gunz, Mack Maine, Jae Millz, Gudda Gudda and R&B alternative singer Shanell all waiting to drop LPs. Add already-established acts such as Birdman, Bow Wow and Lil Wayne to the mix, and it's easy to see how some artists on the roster can get lost in the shuffle. Well, Young Money president Mack Maine has a plan to ensure fans see a steady flow of Cash Money-helmed releases.

"You know how Roc-A-Fella had State Property; I'm actually in the process of starting a new label ... a sub-label, basically," Mack said of the still-untitled imprint that he will head under the Cash Money umbrella.
Wayne is scheduled to drop Tha Carter IV on June 21, and there are plans for Birdman's fifth solo album, Bigger Than Life, to follow in July. And, that isn't all: According to the YM prez, Tyga will be dropping Careless World this year, Lil Twist will be putting out his first effort, Don't Get it Twisted, and Drake is readying his sophomore LP, Take Care. "[Drake] let me hear 10 songs the other night — 10 bangers he's working," Mack said. "Drake's coming in September, just know that."
Not to be left out, Mack himself also will be releasing an album this summer. With at least six projects already on the proposed schedule, the New Orleans rapper/executive said adding a third label to the YMCM structure will help facilitate the flow of releases. "I want to make sure I put a few people out through that vessel instead of putting everybody out under the same label, which is hard," he said. "But we're all one big family."
Which Young Money Cash Money project are you most excited for? Tell us in the comments below!

Keen On? Scott Harrison: Water Changes Everything (TCTV)

Happy Earth Day everyone!

And to have a good Earth Day, and I mean a really good one, you need to watch a three minute video that was released today. It?s called Water Changes Everything and it?s been made by charity: water, an amazing non-profit organization founded by the incomparable Scott Harrison and actively supported by many Silicon Valley notables including Michael Birch, Jack Dorsey and Chris Sacca.

And then, after you?ve watched Water Changes Everything, please watch three short Earth Day interviews I conducted with Scott Harrison in which he talks about ways that we can both save water and help solve the water crisis afflicting a billion people around the world. Did you know, for example, that 50% of schools in the world still don?t have clean water or that a $5,000 donation can finance a well which will provide water to an entire village?

Eddie Alvarez Wins a Decision, Keeps Bellator Belt

by Michael David SmithWhen Eddie Alvarez walked into the cage on Saturday night he was supposed to win in dominant fashion, befitting his status as the best and most popular fighter in the Bellator Fighting Championships. But Saturday's title fight against Pat Curran was tougher than Alvarez (and most fans) could have expected.

Alvarez won a unanimous decision to retain the Bellator lightweight title, and the scorecards (one judge scored it 49-46 while the other two judges scored it 50-45) make it look like the fight wasn't close. But Curran was a tough customer who was in it until the final bell.

"That guy's got a hard, hard head, man," Alvarez said of Curran afterward. "He can take a shot." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Justin Bieber Vintage Video: His First Meeting With Usher

Justin Timberlake also wanted to sign Bieber, 'Never Say Never' star said in 2009.By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber

Photo: Brian Phares/MTV News

Just as the world was learning who Justin Bieber was, MTV News caught up with the shaggy-haired singer in September 2009. He was gearing up to release his debut album, My World, and plotting his pop-world domination. In the year and a half since that interview, Bieber has done the nearly impossible, launching himself into the pop mega-sphere.

In the chat, Bieber recalled how he and his manager, Scooter Braun, met and eventually got big names interested in signing the teen.
"My manager found me on YouTube. He flew me out to Atlanta for the first time — I'd never actually been on a plane before. He flew me to Atlanta where i was going to the studio to meet some people," he recalled.
"And Usher happened to roll up in his Range Rover. I ran up to him, and I was like, 'Usher, I love your songs. Want me to sing you one?' The politest possible way he could say no, he did. ... I took the hint. I didn't get to sing for him: He had to run into a studio session."
But later, Usher was beckoning the teen back to the ATL. "He actually watched my videos — after my manager got to talking to him — and was like, 'I should have let this kid sing,' and flew me back to Atlanta where I got to sing for him in a proper setting. A week later, I had a meeting with Justin Timberlake, who also wanted to sign me, so they both kind of wanted me."
As the story goes, Bieber went with Usher, and the two never looked back.
"As far as Usher being my mentor, he's definitely given me words of wisdom. I hear it from everybody, but definitely to hear it from Usher is great, just to stay humble and grounded is very important," he explained.
"There's a lot of people, especially young stars, that have gone down the wrong path, and I definitely plan to stay humble and stay grounded and keep my family first, because that stuff really is important in life."
On Friday, Justin Bieber's 3-D documentary, "Never Say Never," opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel's patents to protect against litigation trolls

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google's $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn't mean that Google will automatically win Nortel's massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google's relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel's portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It's worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents -- which are nearly all telecoms-related -- will be used to defend against Oracle's attacks on Android's use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.Google bids $900 million for Nortel's patents to protect against litigation trolls originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 13:30:00 EST. Michael Jackson's 'Thriller': Story Behind The 'Glee' Cover

MJ classic is mashed up with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' 'Heads Will Roll' for post-Super Bowl episode.By Aly Semigran

"Glee"

Photo: FOX

Madonna, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and now, finally, Michael Jackson. The cast of "Glee" has covered plenty of icons during their first two seasons, but it's taken 33 episodes to get around to the King of Pop.
With a huge catalog of Jackson songs, the singing, dancing students of McKinley High paid homage to the late singer with one of his biggest staples (and, arguably, the greatest music video of all time) with their take on "Thriller."

The groundbreaking single from Jackson's best-selling album of the same name was mashed up with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Heads Will Roll" for the post-Super Bowl episode (titled "The Sue Sylvester Bowl Shuffle"), featuring a zombie-fied "Glee" cast.
Bound to become a smash all over again (though with its nonstop rotation at Halloween parties and wedding receptions until the end of time, it's never truly gone away), here's a brief history of the dance/pop classic.
Released on January 23, 1984, "Thriller" was the seventh, and final, single to be released from Jackson's smash record. According to the RIAA, the album (released by Epic Records) has gone gold 29 times, narrowly edging out the Eagles' Greatest Hits 1971-1975 for the title of best-selling album of all time.
In 2009, MTV News estimated that the Thriller album was poised to go triple diamond, meaning 30 million records sold in the U.S. alone.
After Thriller's other singles (including "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and "Wanna Be Startin' Something") dominated the charts, it was time for the spooky, undeniably original track to take over. The song "Thriller" also appeared on many of Jackson's other albums, including the compilations HIStory and Number Ones.
Clocking in at a little under six minutes (though the radio edit was closer to four-and-a-half), the song features pop-music mainstays like synthesizers but shakes things up with its spooky sound effects, including creaking floors, howling and thunder.
The song was produced by Quincy Jones and written and composed by Rod Tempterton and spent 14 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #4.
But it's the music video for "Thriller" that truly made it the phenomenon it was in the '80s and continues to be today. Less a music video than a mini-motion picture, the video (over 13 minutes long and directed by John Landis) won three MTV Video Music Awards and has been named the best music video of all time by many outlets, including VH1 for the special "VH1: 100 Greatest Videos."
The chiller features Jackson in that iconic red leather jacket on a date with his girlfriend (played by Ola Ray) before things go terribly awry. After all, as Jackson (whose disclaimer at the start of the video reads, "This film in no way endorses a belief in the occult") sings in the opening line, "It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark." Cue werewolves, zombies, Vincent Price's soliloquy and one of the most memorable dance sequences ever.
The video was (no pun intended) a monster hit. As the Los Angeles Times notes, "At the height of the song's popularity, MTV would run the 14-minute 'Thriller' video twice an hour."
Choreographed by Jackson and Michael Peters (who, as the LA Times also reported, appears in the video as one of the zombies) and with makeup by Oscar-winner Rick Baker (also an undead "Thriller" extra) was made with a huge budget of an estimated $500,000.
Still, the efforts paid off. Landis (who told the "Today" show back in 2009 that no one wanted to give them the funds to make the risky vid) made the accompanying 45-minute documentary about the venture, called "The Making of Thriller." Featuring the behind-the-scenes wizardry, as well as the music video in full, it would go on to move more than 10 million copies.
Since then, the signature song and video have seen their share fair of tributes in movies (notably in the 2004 comedy"13 Going on 30") and TV ("South Park," "Family Guy," "30 Rock," among others), not to mention the countless flash mobs that have gone viral. (Remember the prisoners in the Philippines who became overnight phenomenons on YouTube?)
Even with the "Glee" number, this likely won't be the last incarnation of "Thriller." Billboard reported in October that a "Thriller" film is in the works. With a plot allegedly revolving around Price's narration, Kenny Ortega, who directed Jackson's last effort, "This Is It," will reportedly helm the project.
Since Jackson's untimely passing on June 25, 2009, the song and video's legacy continue to live on. In the week following Jackson's death, "Thriller" was the best-selling track in the U.S., with sales of 167,000 copies on the Billboard Hot Digital Singles chart.
Then, in December 2009, "Thriller" was the first music video to ever be inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. It seems "no mere mortal can resist ... the thriller" after all.
What did you think of the "Thriller" mash-up on "Glee"? Let us know in the comments!

Jerry Seinfeld vs. Donald Trump in New Celeb Feud!

If Donald Trump does indeed run for President, he won't be getting an endorsement from Jerry Seinfeld. The comedian, 56, recently dropped out of a Trump-sponsored charity event because he disagreed with the Donald's "birther" views. (For the uninitiated, Trump is part of a group, known as the birthers, that wants Obama to disclose his birth certificate to prove that he was born in the U.S. -- and thus eligible to be president.)
Needless to say, the Celebrity Apprentice creator didn't take it well. In an open letter to Seinfeld, Trump attacks the comedian for dropping out of the event, which is being thrown by his son, Eric Trump, to benefit the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
"I just learned you canceled a show for my son's charity because of the fact that I am being very aggressive with respect to President Obama, who is doing an absolutely terrible job as our leader," begins Trump's letter, before launching into a no-holds-barred attack on Seinfeld.
"We don't care that you broke your commitment, even though the children of St. Jude are very disappointed, and despite the fact that your manager clearly stated you are 'truly a man of his word,'" the Donald continued. "What I do feel badly about is that I agreed to do, and did, your failed show, The Marriage Ref, even though I thought it was absolutely terrible... Despite its poor ratings, I didn't cancel on you like you canceled on my son and St. Jude. I only wish I did."
In conclusion, Trump tells Seinfeld, "You should be ashamed of yourself!" Trump also announced that he'd replaced Seinfeld with rocker Bret Michaels.
In the comedian's defense, Seinfeld's rep says that Jerry agreed to the benefit before Trump started teasing his presidential run, and that he "has grown increasingly uncomfortable" with Trump's comments about Obama's citizenship. Although Seinfeld withdrew from the event, he made a financial contribution to both the Eric Trump Foundation and St. Jude's -- which you'd think would count for something.
While Trump has always been outspoken (especially about anyone who makes him angry -- that would be you, Rosie O'Donnell), Seinfeld had been pretty mild-mannered until recently. Lately it seems like he's mouthing off on everything -- calling the royal wedding a "circus act" and Lady Gaga a "jerk." Clearly, he's got his own opinions -- and, as the standoff with Trump demonstrates, his own principles. Maybe Seinfeld should be the one running for office!

Middletons Meet Queen Elizabeth

It wasn't quite Meet the Parents, but it had to have been stressesful for Kate Middleton's parents to meet the Queen of England for the first time, just nine days before the royal wedding.
Michael, 61, and Carole Middleton, 56, on Wednesday had lunch at Windsor Castle with Queen Elizabeth II (who turns 85 today) and her husband, Prince Philip, 89. While details on the meeting are scarce, it's been reported that the future in-laws spent about an hour in what was described as "a warm atmosphere."
Meanwhile, daughter Kate -- while not exactly old chums with the Queen -- has already met Prince William's grandmother a few times, the first in 2006 when all attended the prince's graduation from the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.
Meeting your future in-laws can be tricky under any circumstances, but especially when they turn out to be the sovereign head of an entire nation, what with all the curtsying-this and "Your Majesty"-that.
A friend recalls that the situation wasn't quite so fraught when her parents met her fiancé's parents for the first time, but still had an element of "Oh no!" to it. A day or so before the big meet-and-greet, Jennifer's father dove into a hot sausage and peppers sandwich, "and the cheese wound up literally burning off some of the skin on his chin," she remembers. "He looked like a leper."
Not waiting for her future husband's parents to run out of the door screaming once they got a look, "I wound up just calling it out 5 seconds after they met, because it was just so gross and obvious, it needed to be mentioned," she says. Must have been the right move, as she reports that his parents didn't jump up to object during the ceremony.

Lady Gaga To Perform On 'Saturday Night Live'

Sources tell MTV News she'll appear alongside Justin Timberlake on May 7.By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga

Photo: Tom Briglia/ WireImage

When Justin Timberlake returns to host "Saturday Night Live" next month, none other than Lady Gaga will join him as musical guest during the May 7 show. A source confirmed the booking to MTV News, though no official confirmation has come though from "SNL" reps.
Gaga last appeared on the show in October 2009 in what went down as one very memorable episode. Gaga and Madonna poked fun at pop-star rivalries during the sketch "Deep House Dish," where they had a catfight and nearly kissed.
That night, Gaga performed two songs: a high-concept take on "Paparazzi" and a piano-driven performance of her dance track "LoveGame." She later appeared in a sketch alongside Andy Samberg, when both of them wore her famous bubble dress.
Being that this latest appearance comes just as Gaga is dropping her May 23 album release Born This Way, there's a good chance she'll perform lead singles "Born This Way" and "Judas." Or, as she's known to do, she might just dazzle fans with a brand-new track.
This is the latest promotional appearance announced for the album, including a May 27 appearance on "Good Morning America" that will kick off the show's summer concert series and the May 7 premiere of Gaga's highly anticipated HBO special, which was taped at New York's Madison Square Garden in February. She also just wrapped up work on her video for "Judas," though no date has been set for its release.
What are you expecting from Gaga's return trip to "SNL"? Let us know in the comments!

Last Chair, Last Call in Montana

The neon was bright and the one pieces tight at the local mountain's season ender here in Montana. This was of course after I made it to the mountain after picking up the pieces from the night before's last chair party that seamlessly blended into last chair morning. Finding people and loosing people in the car pool, gear explosion that usually ensues after such an event had left us worried about our friend Shane who had called to inform us he had been pulled over en route and we instantly feared a daytime DUI.

Photo:Reid Morth
Duncan getting the dance party started with his ghetto blaster, at the 2011 end the season party.

Being the concerned friends we are, we gave our obligatory "Ah man, sh#%. I hope Shane doesn't get a DUI" and headed off to the mountain. At the mountain and after the multiple choice of ticket clipping, ticket swapping or green pass we opted for B and before no time Kevin, Kirby, Shay, Carson, Jim and the rest of the growing gang met at the mid-mountain lift. I couldn't have paid for that kind of fun literally and figuratively - tomahawking, naked skiing and enough neon to blister your eyeballs matched with moose knuckles, division symbols and other varieties of mystery meat zipped snugly into retro ski gear so classic one could weep with nostalgia.
The last day of the season is about riding with good friends and getting in those last lift access turns for the season and after an internal struggle I ditched the camera gear. Not long after, Shane met back up with us and it was off to endless options of wall / cat track hits and a few laps with the Bomb Snow boys. The sun came out in the afternoon right on cue for a massive of gathering at the top lift where the celebration continued well after the lifts closed and eventually graduated to a meadow just out of bounds where a fire pit gap and snow benches accommodated a smaller handful of us having to much fun to call it just yet.
The party moved from the mountain back to town and as the midnight hours rolled in, our crew dwindled down and the karaoke was up - Shane and Todd laid down a spicy version of Garth Brook's - I've got friends (in low f---ing places). I was thoroughly impressed with the impromptu but the bar was a gallery of shell shocked faces and somewhere between Garth Brooks and our ridiculous outfits a fight broke out and after a few tables got overturned and a few meatheads were hauled off by the bouncers the fun was back on track - the beers and good times kept rolling all the way to last call.

Diaz defends belt with TKO of Daley at Strikeforce

Winning his 10th bout in a row, Nick Diaz defended his Strikeforce welterweight championship belt, winning a first-round TKO over Paul Daley in an action-packed bout in the main event in San Diego on Saturday.
After initial taunting from Diaz, Daley took the bait. He dropped Diaz with a series of strikes, then followed up with a kick to the body. Diaz survived and stood up, then came back and had Daley pinned against the cage. Diaz threw punch after punch, hurting Daley along the way. Daley tried for a takedown, which wasn't a bright move since Diaz is a jiu-jitsu whiz.
They returned to their feet, and neither fighter stopped throwing strikes for much of the first round. Daley dropped Diaz with a left hook and then jumped into Diaz's guard. Diaz kicked Daley off, and then was stood back up by referee John McCarthy. Diaz finally took over, using strikes to the body and head to knock Daley to the ground, then finished up with ground strikes. McCarthy jumped in and stopped the fight at 4:57, giving Diaz the win.
After the win, Diaz was noncommittal about who he would like to fight next.
"I don't know. We've got to see what's up," Diaz said.
Diaz didn't ask for the unification bout like his teammate Gilbert Melendez did. Diaz's teammate Jake Shields is fighting Georges St. Pierre for the UFC welterweight belt at the end of April. Though Diaz has said that he wants GSP, if Shields were to win, Diaz would be put in the awkward position of having to fight a teammate.
Daley is already in an awkward position, as he was released from his UFC contractfor throwing a punchin his bout with Josh Koscheck. Now, with the UFC and Strikeforce having the same ownership, Daley's future is less sure. A win over Diaz could have strengthened it, but now he drops to 27-10-2.

Droid Landing's back -- prepare the search!

Following in the proud steps of the Droid 2 R2-D2 and the Droid X before that, it looks like Verizon is kicking off it's latest cross-country, Droid-finding bonanza. The latest tweet from @DroidLanding -- it's back! -- tipped us off to the mystery-in-progress, but not much else. The message is as uninformative and cryptic as ever, but it's good to know that "field agents await instructions." So what phone are we looking for? The Droid X2? The Droid Charge? Droid Incredible 2? It's hard to say at this point, but we know the jig is up, the game is on. So grab your pocket protectors and sharpen up your sleuthing skills, because it's about time we found those Droids we were looking for. [@DroidLanding] Thanks, @holmesbrandon!Droid Landing's back -- prepare the search! posted originally by Android CentralSponsored by Android Cases and Accessories
