Reports of testing are starting to sound increasingly like a broken record, with weather being a constant factor preventing the teams from testing properly. The second day of testing for a small group of World Superbike riders at Portimao turned into another washout, with heavy rain and cold temperatures wracking the Portuguese coast.
Despite that, the teams present went out and tested anyway, focusing instead on setup and working on known issues. At the end of the day, it was Ruben Xaus who got his name atop the timesheets on his very first outing on the Ten Kate Honda, finishing three tenths of a second ahead of BMW new boy Leon Haslam, and over a second ahead of his Ten Kate teammate Johnny Rea. Alstare Suzuki's Michel Fabrizio matched the pace of Rea, who was a couple of tenths quicker than BMW's Troy Corser. Two former factory riders on new machines - James Toseland on a BMW and Noriyuki Haga on an Aprilia - propped up the bottom of the timesheets, though the conditions leave the times being set devoid of meaning.

HRC MOTOGP TEST AT SEPANG ENDS 2010 ON TRACK DEVELOPMENT WORK
The HRC MotoGP test team brought curtain down on the 2010 season on-track when they wrapped up the three-day test at Sepang Malaysia today. The test session was scheduled to end yesterday but was extended to include a three-hour session this morning due to time last to heavy rain yesterday afternoon.
The test team and HRC test rider Kousuke Akiyoshi were happy with the data gleaned while verifying information and technical data gathered at the last team test session, held at Valencia in early November.
The HRC test was also a happy experience for Ten Kate Honda World Superbike team rider Jonathan Rea. The Ulsterman was given the opportunity to test the RC212V as a reward for his WSB performances in 2010. Race completed the test alongside Akiyoshi running for 40 laps in fine sunny weather with temperatures close on 30 degrees for the morning session.

Billy Ray Cyrus may have been disappointed in his daughter Miley Cyrus' recent bad behavior (the teen sensation was caught on camera smoking a bong) but that doesn't mean everyone is scolding the former Hannah Montana star.

Kelly Osbourne, who is currently filming the movie So Undercover with the 18-year-old Cyrus, came to her new pal's defense on her Twitter page. Osbourne, 26, told followers on Tuesday, "Just read in the rags that apparently my mum [Sharon Osbourne] thinks Miley is a bad influence on me. It could not be farther from the truth!"

Osbourne goes on to say that Cyrus "has us all on a health kick. Gym/early nights." In fact, she claims if anyone is the bad influence, it's her. The former reality star posted a picture on Twitter of herself and Cyrus chowing down on cupcakes, with the caption: "This is how I'm a bad influence on Miley...I force her to eat cupcakes so I don't feel so bad about eating one!"

She also told fans, "Miley and I have become really close. I'm sick of all the haters judging her." It's not the first time Osbourne has spoken out about their blossoming friendship while the two are on location in New Orleans. "I luv Miley we r having a blast," Osbourne (who has been spotted clubbing with her new BFF) posted on Twitter on Dec. 10.

On Tuesday, Osbourne (who has a history with drugs herself) also broached the subject of the salvia controversy, writing that her friend made "one mistake, and trust me she has learned her lesson! This really makes me mad. Miley is one of the most hard working respectful women I have ever worked with I am learning a lot from her!" Let's hope that whatever these two ladies are learning from each other will keep them out of trouble!

Okay, so we're not quite at the point where you're going to be playing the next Crysis sequel in your browser, but still -- the arrival of WebGL in Chrome's beta channel is kind of a big deal. Apart from being able to play around with cool demos like the ones offered up by Google in its official announcement, WebGL is another important step in bringing more desktop-like functionality to the Web.

In addition to cloud-y 3D support, hardware acceleration support is due to arrive at some point -- presumably before Chrome 9 gets pushed to the stable channel. Whether or not that will happen remains to be seen, but we'll know soon enough thanks to the six-week release cycle.

ATLANTA — As the debate among teen girls rages on about whether Justin Bieber is dating his tourmate, Disney princess Selena Gomez, the megastar teen is confident about one thing: Gomez's awesomeness.

MTV News caught up with the 16-year-old sensation as he got the word out about his holiday toy-collecting campaign, "Stuff Bieber's Bus," in Atlanta on Thursday (December 23), and while he didn't suggest that the two were more than friends, he did gush a little bit about the "Wizards of Waverly Place" actress.
"She's really cool," Bieber said. "She's an amazing person."
The "Baby" singer also commented about the nonstop fan frenzy and media mania that accompany any rumors about who the Biebs is or is not dating, and said that despite his outsize fame, he plans to keep his private life private.
"I think that people are always gonna be interested in my personal life ... but I gotta keep some things to myself," he said of the constant buzz surrounding his relationship with Gomez. "I'm just having fun being a teenager."
Speculation that the fresh-faced duo are more than friends has ramped up ever since the two were spotted hanging out and getting pancakes arm-in-arm. However, Gomez has batted away rumors that she and the "Somebody to Love" crooner are anything more than buddies who occasionally enjoy getting a bite to eat.
"It was pancakes. Who doesn't like pancakes?" Gomez told MTV News earlier this month.
Gomez has also talked about her "brotherly" relationship with Bieber, saying that she tries to keep an eye out for him as he continues to skyrocket toward megastardom.
"I love Justin. When he first started to come over from Canada, his manager contacted me and he just said that he would like to meet me and he was just such a good kid," she told MTV News in February. "And I feel like a big sister now, 'cause I want to protect him. So I'm always very cautious with him, but he is so talented and he's so sweet, so that just started us wanting to work together. Now he's just become one of my good friends."

Thanks to a single sentence in a New York Times article, a number of blogs are trumpeting the first public demonstration of Windows 8 at CES in January. It was already known that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer would be on stage to showcase a handful of slates, but would they really be running the first builds of Windows.next already?

According to the Times, a source "with knowledge of Microsoft's plans" believed "Ballmer might demonstrate a tablet and other companion devices running the next operating system, Windows 8." However, as Tom Warren points out, Microsoft is currently laying out the groundwork for Windows 8 -- planning and preparing for what Ballmer called Microsoft's "riskiest product bet."

January seems a bit soon to be showing off something your CEO thinks is your "riskiest bet," especially considering this is the same company that just tried to launch the Kin. While there may indeed be a prototype or concept device on display, there's a good chance it could run an existing flavor of Windows with a slate-specific UI on top. It lets you see which videos are trending in a specific demographic, with the ability to sort by location (US state, or country), age group, and sex. If that wasn't cool enough, you can do a side-by-side comparison of up to three different demographics. There are some shocking differences, even between the east and west coast of America; while the teenage girls of Atlanta are loving Bruno Mars, those in Los Angeles are into Justin Bieber. Adding to the magical wonder of Coke's 'Snow Globe Santa' Christmas commercial, Google's AdMob team has collaborated with the One True Soda Master to create a truly festive Android experience: a snow globe live wallpaper (QR code after the break).

The live wallpaper -- which basically turns your Android phone into a very cute snow globe -- will be promoted via the AdMob network, which many free apps use to create revenue. When users see the ad, they'll be able to click straight through to the Android Market and install the live wallpaper. Google's even produced a video showing you how to install the wallpaper, which feels a bit like overkill, but it's included after the break anyway.

On Tuesday evening, MTV News was on hand when Justin Bieber was discovered laying down tracks at Diddy's recording studio in New York City.

"In the studio getting creative," he wrote. "Just got to show luv to my big bro @iamdiddy and his new album 'Last Train to Paris.' "
Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, explained to us that the pop star had an idea for a song that he needed to "get off of his chest," and that Diddy's studio is like a second home for the teen superstar.
MTV News was spending the day with Diddy, who just released his Last Train to Paris album. Though the rap mogul hardly ever stops working himself, he jokingly complained about Bieber being too busy for him these days.
"Well, I mean, you try to get in contact with me through all my partners and whatnot, but you never really got my number, so you want my number?" the 16-year-old responded.
After an exchange of phone numbers, Diddy made Bieber an official member of Diddy-Dirty Money and gave him and Braun the group's official varsity jacket. "Go get the album. Everybody if you're anybody you'll go get the album," Bieber said endorsing Last Train.
"It's gonna be the greatest album you ever heard," he later added. "Everybody's on this album. Go get this album. We're out."
"I've missed the studio. Just making music," Bieber later tweeted. "Made some great records tonight. Now en route to see my big bro @usherraymondiv."
Bieber then went to take in Usher's show at Madison Square Garden, later tweeting, "big bro @usherraymondiv killed it at MSG tonight. ... I had to come thru and support #family."

Facebook, in a continuing drive to upgrade the most popular portion of its site, will roll out facial recognition auto-tagging of photos in the next few weeks -- if you live in the US, anyway.

Now, when you upload photos, Facebook will compare the faces in the photos with the faces of your friends. If a match is found, you'll be prompted with a suggested tag. If Facebook can't identify a person, it will ask you to enter their name, which will presumably help with identification in the future. If you upload a batch of photos of the same person -- say, from a wedding or birthday party -- Facebook will group those photos together and suggest a tag, making tagging a one- or two-click affair.

With a shocking grasp of foresight, Facebook is going to let you opt out of the auto-tagging process, too! If you don't want your face to be recognized in other people's uploads, hop over to Privacy Settings > Customize Settings, and deselect "Suggest photos of me to friends." [This option doesn't seem to be visible yet, but that could be because I'm in the UK -- or because the roll-out hasn't begun.]

Nothing says truthiness quite like anonymous Chinese sources telling next generation iPad secrets to a Japanese blog lacking any notable successes on the professional rumor mongering circuit. Nevertheless, the Apple rumor sites have jumped all over the story like a Bay Area cop on prototype thief. So here's the dirt, which certainly seems plausible in its specificity: a 3-mm reduction in bezel width, same 9.7-inch display size, and flattening of the back allowing it to rest wobble-free on a desktop. Mac Otakara also explains that there's a "wide-range speaker" covered with "metal mesh" (that's their render above) occupying the cut-out we saw at the bottom of those supposed next-generation iPad cases. The overall unit is said to measure 239 x 186 mm compared to the current iPad's 242.8 x 189.7 mm footprint. Suspiciously, the site was unable to reliably confirm the existence of front of rear facing cameras but does claim that the new iPads will begin shipping from factories in January -- timing that aligns nicely with previous rumors. Charles Oliveira is a great prospect. The key word is prospect. The 21-year-old was facing a guy with seven UFC wins and a well-rounded game. Oliveira took Miller lightly on the ground and paid for it. The New Jersey-native, working from top control in a standing position, transitioned to an ankle lock. Oliveira didn't do much to extricate himself, and Miller cranked back with a kneebar. Oliveira tapped almost immediately giving Miller the win at 1:59 of the first round. "When I stood up and the leg presented itself, I went for it," Miller said at the UFC 124 postfight press conference. "I really don't care where the fight ends up going. I started attacking the toe hold and he didn't worry about the knee." Update - Miller split the Submission of the Night award with Mark Bocek and received $50,000 for his efforts. Miller's appearance must fool people. At just 5-foot-7 with a red beard, he looks like the guy next door. There was heavy betting on Oliveira. By the time the fight went off, Miller was a plus-140 underdog in spite of entering the match with a six-fight win streak. "Coming into the fight, I was trying to gain a little respect to be honest," Miller said. at the UFC 124 postfight press conference. "We went into that fight with him as the favorite, which I really didn't understand.""He's got a big future ahead of him, but I knew I've fought a lot tougher guys than he has," Miller said. "I was trying to leave me mark and really get after him." Even Dana White had his doubts about Miller's chances on the ground with Oliveira."When he went for that foot, me and (UFC owner Lorenzo) Fertitta looked at each other and said 'that was stupid.' Then he pulls off that kneebar," White laughed. "Goes to show you what we know. That why he fights and we don't." Miller (19-2, 8-1 UFC) is a tough nut to crack. His only loss came
against Gray Maynard, who is unbeaten in the UFC and challenging UFC
lightweight champ Frank Edgar for the title next month. Oliveira (14-1, 2-1 UFC) was the rage of the division after two dominant UFC wins since August.

Beyoncé doesn't have that much left to prove in her career. She's a megaplatinum artist, an accomplished actress, half of one of the most successful musical couples in history and a fashion icon.
But on the follow-up to her smash 2008 Grammy-winning album I Am ... Sasha Fierce, the singer is aiming to carve an entirely new lane for herself.
"I love to dance, I love to sing, and I'm actually in the studio now writing songs and producing," the singer told "Entertainment Tonight" from the set of a new commercial she's filming for Vizio televisions. "I have a lot of live instruments that I'm putting into the tracks to try to change the sound and make my own genre of music."
The commercial will debut on Thanksgiving day, just after the singer rocks prime-time TV with an ABC Thanksgiving special entitled "I Am ... World Tour."
Among the producers and songwriters working with Beyoncé on the new, as-yet-untitled album is Ne-Yo, who helped write one of the 29-year-old singer's biggest hits, "Irreplaceable."
Ne-Yo told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Beyoncé's fourth solo effort is "coming along nicely. I can't speak too much on it, but it's another direction for her, and she's carving out her own niche. ... In a minute nobody will be in Beyoncé's lane. They really can't get in her lane now, but they really can't get in her lane after this album."
In the meantime, producer Jim Jonsin, who produced her song "Sweet Dreams," has also said he has some new directions in mind for Beyoncé. "I'd like to take it even more Depeche Mode-ish, like '80s electro with just some hard drums," he told Rap-Up TV. "I'd love to go there."
That fits with what songwriter Sean "The Pen" Garrett recently told Entertainment Weekly. Garrett, who was behind such hits as "Video Phone," "Diva" and "Upgrade U," said that he was slated to hit the studio with Beyoncé in September and that the results would be hard-hitting.
"I think we are doing a lot of uptempo records for this one," he said.
"She's in such a good place right now in life that she is interested in making party music, definitely."

The characteristic most often associated with Pixel Qi screens -- aside from their prized daylight-readable quality -- up to this point has been scarcity. Hoping to correct that supply shortage, Mary Lou Jepsen's team has today announced a partnership with Taiwanese manufacturer Chunghwa Picture Tubes to, well, produce some picture tubes. Apparently, "the teams have been working together quietly all fall" and now they're ready to make things official, while also announcing that three new panels will be coming to market at various points during 2011. The first of those, a 7-inch screen with a 1024 x 600 resolution, is set to make its debut at CES in early January, with mass production coming in the second quarter of the year. Google are expected to launch cloud print-enabled Android apps later today, which will mean you can print from your phone direct to your printer -- or indeed any printer that's connected to Google Cloud Print.

Lady Gaga has signed on for another year as the spokesperson for MAC's Viva Glam campaign. While she was joined by Cyndi Lauper for her participation in the 2010 campaign, for 2011 she's going it alone, a rep for the cosmetics company confirmed to MTV News.
According to the company, Gaga and Lauper's campaign helped yield the most successful campaign since the 1994 launch of Viva Glam, a lipstick line that raises money for the MAC AIDS Fund. Further information about Gaga's latest campaign hasn't been released, but one photo is out. In it, Gaga is bathed in a pink glow, her hair parted to one side, as she looks longingly off in the distance and clutches a handful of diamond and pearl necklaces.
The photos were taken by Nick Knight and she was styled by longtime stylist Nicola Formichetti. Knight's photos seem more somber than the fun-loving, pinup-style Viva Glam photos Ellen von Unwerth shot of Gaga and Lauper.
"We want women to feel strong and feel strong enough that they can remember to protect themselves. To have this lipstick as a reminder in your purse, that when your man is laying naked in bed, you go into the bathroom, you put your lipstick on, and you bring a condom out with you," Gaga said earlier this year about her participation with the charity. "There are no exceptions. ... This idea of negotiation before intercourse is this kind of ridiculous thing in the age that we're living in. I would say never, but you must be in a loving, monogamous relationship or married. We're not in an age when you can have irresponsible, condom-less sex."

Tomorrow, December 7, Google is expected to launch its new netbook-and-tablet cloud-based operating system, Chrome OS. It's also entirely possible that Google will simply show off the much-hyped Chrome Web Store. The event was only announced December 3, and it's extremely unlikely that Google would rush the launch of something huge and consumer-facing.

Even if Chrome OS is shown off tomorrow, it's could be a matter of weeks ormonths until you get your hands on a Chrome OS netbook (or smartbook). That's why we've created a new gallery which showcases the new OS and walks you through all of the new features. Just so it's clear: this is Chromium OS, Chrome OS's open source brother. I've been told by a couple of Googlers that the public and private repositories aren't very different, however.

Some important bits are still missing -- most obviously Cloud Print -- and a lot of key features still remain hidden behind the about:flags barricade. Fundamental features such as the media player and support for USB and SD card storage are still considered 'experimental'. In fact, while the browser itself is as excellent as always, most of the OS-specific bits seem to be a bit flaky.

In the gallery, I've tried to highlight bits that we haven't shown before, such as the keyboard overlays and user management. Note that the docking Gmail chat manager is back, but that Picasa integration is still ominously missing. The coolest bit is that Chromium OS, like its browser brother, now seems to have developer and beta channels -- but it isn't functional yet.

Once you've browsed through it, you'll likely reach the same conclusion as me: Unless Google has held back a lot of non-public code, Chrome OS simply isn't ready for launch. Gaga becomes just the seventh woman ever to take home the magazine's highest honor, which she dedicates to her fans. By James Montgomery

On Thursday, Lady Gaga capped off a tremendous 2010 by being named Billboard magazine's Artist of the Year, becoming only the seventh woman ever to take home the honor since the magazine began handing it out in 1981.
And in true testament to her meteoric rise to the top of the charts, Gaga's Artist of the Year nod comes just one year after she was named Billboard's Top New Artist, making her only the third act ever — after Chris Brown and Whitney Houston — to accomplish that feat.
Gaga beat out heavyweights like Taylor Swift, Eminem and Lady Antebellum to take home Artist of the Year, which, according to Billboard, was bestowed upon her "thanks in part to the chart performance of her first two albums, The Fame and The Fame Monster, which rank at numbers 4 and 13 on the year-end Top Billboard 200 Albums ... [and] four singles from that album, [which] appear on the Hot 100 Songs roundup, led by 'Bad Romance' at number 8."
The other women previously named the mag's Artist of the Year are Swift (2009), LeAnn Rimes (1997), Alanis Morissette (1996), Mariah Carey (1991), Houston (1986) and Madonna (1985).
The Billboard honor comes exactly one week after Gaga picked up six Grammy nominations, and early Friday morning, she took to her Twitter account — remember, she had been digitally dead for nearly a week — to dedicate her accolades to her fans.
"Monsters have 6 Grammy nominations and Billboard award [for] 'Artist of the Year,' " she wrote. "Thank you for fighting for artistic freedom and self-invention."

All day on Thursday (December 9), Madame Tussauds unveiled eight wax versions of Lady Gaga all over the world, including at the museum's European outposts, as well as one in New York's Times Square. MTV News was on hand for the NYC unveiling of the pop star's wax likeness, where her little monsters showed up dressed up in Gaga-like garb to catch a glimpse of the statue.

For the New York version, Gaga appears in a sheer black dress paired with a wide-brim hat made of hair, a look she wore to the Consumer Electronics Show back in January. Earlier in the day, figures were unveiled in Asia and Europe, and they fittingly each have their own unique fashion statement, which Gaga fans were invited to help pick out. In Berlin, Gaga wears a blazer, leotard and hair bow; in London the figure dons a Philip Treacy telephone hat and sparkly navy Armani suit; in Amsterdam, she's in a nude bodysuit, a white blazer and a towering purple beehive. Her skintight black harlequin outfit is featured in Hong Kong, and her wire "wing" dress is on display in Shanghai. Gaga statues are also making their debut in Los Angeles and Las Vegas later in the day.
"As one of the biggest and most unique talents in the world, Lady Gaga is the perfect subject for the biggest figure launch in Madame Tussauds' history," a November press release said, explaining why Gaga was getting so many statues. "All of the styles being worked on are classic Gaga, and we're sure her fans will be delighted with the unique looks when we unveil the figures next month."
Gaga is one of the many pop stars to get a wax statue this year. She joins Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian and Gwen Stefani as some of the latest celebs to be immortalized for the museum.
