Questions not to ask skydivers

As skydivers, we all experience those conversations with whuffos that make us want to push rusty nails deep into our eyeballs because that might be more enjoyable than enduring the annoying string of questions spewing from their face. Harsh, yes. But sometimes my dear whuffo friends and family, the questions are a bit much. Below [...]

Google Voice Search learns Latin American Spanish, Indonesian, and Malaysian

Google Voice Search has just introduced localizations for Latin America, Indonesia and Malaysia, enabling native language search for hundreds of millions of users.

Google's official blog post offers some interesting insights into the process of collecting and analyzing the speech data needed to expand support. Thousands of hours were spent gathering voice samples and choosing key regional accents to analyze, and International Program Manager Linne Ha is clearly very appreciative of the Google users who helped the company complete the expansion. Without an enthusiastic base of users to lend a hand, Google Voice Search's polyglot powers would have been nearly impossible to deliver.Google Voice Search learns Latin American Spanish, Indonesian, and Malaysian originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 09:00:00 EST. World's smallest 4K USB 3.0 camera delivers 21 frames per second, fits in pockets

After proving that a 1080p webcam on USB 3.0 was possible, to the surprise of none, Point Grey's latest addition is a little more impressive, This "ice-cube sized" camera can pipe 4,096 x 2,160 images through that capacious USB 3.0 port, using Sony's new IMX1221 Exmor R sensor. Thanks to its size, the camera is geared toward business-centric applications, including broadcasting and high-resolution optical inspection -- which goes some way to explaining the $945 retail price. The full technical spec sheet waits in the press release, right after the break.Continue reading World's smallest 4K USB 3.0 camera delivers 21 frames per second, fits in pocketsWorld's smallest 4K USB 3.0 camera delivers 21 frames per second, fits in pockets originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 11:32:00 EDT. Robert Plant And Alison Krauss Win Grammy Album Of The Year

Raising Sand, from Led Zeppelin vet and bluegrass superstar, wins five Grammys on Sunday night.

By James Montgomery with MTV News staff

<P>"I'm bewildered," <a href="/music/artist/plant_robert/artist.jhtml">Robert Plant</a> said onstage as he accepted the <MTVNLINK type="news" id="1604580">Grammy Album of the Year award</MTVNLINK> with <a href="/music/artist/krauss_alison/artist.jhtml">Alison Krauss</a> on Sunday night. "In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday."</P><P>He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because <i>Raising Sand,</i> which won five trophies at Sunday night's show, is in many ways the perfect <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys/">Grammy</a> album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker's dozen of time-tested standards.</p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:338316" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D338316" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p></P><P>You're probably familiar with Robert Plant from his <a href="/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a> days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett's work on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don't know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she's won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history.</P><P>Really, she's the key to <i>Sand</i>'s success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music &#8212; so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, <i>Sand</i> was released.</P><P>And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album's finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she's getting bluesy on Little Milton's "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" or entwining with Plant's husky voice on songs like "Please Read the Letter" and Roly Salley's winsome "Killing the Blues," she more than carries her end of the bargain.</P><P>And perhaps that's also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on <i>Sand.</i> His arrangements are sparse &#8212; giving the two voices ample room to breathe &#8212; yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It's a testament to his work that he's often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project ... and it's certainly justified.</P><P>To date, <i>Sand</i> has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year &#8212; "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.</P><P>One expert was surprised not by the album's success, but by the fact that it's actually quite a good album.</P><P>"At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. ... Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn't have to be any good, you know?" <i>New York Times</i> music critic Jon Caramanica said. "Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really <i>good</i> record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards."

?Shogun? Rua would rather lose his job than fight phenom Glover Teixeira

Glover Teixeira has a well-earned reputation of an extremely dangerous fighter. He hasn't lost since 2005, and 11 of his 19 wins come by knockout. The reputation is so well-known that former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua told UFC president Dana White he'd rather lose his job than fight Teixeira.
After Thiago Silva scrapped his fight with Rua because of an injury, the UFC needed a new opponent for Shogun.
"He said that he'd actually rather be cut than have to fight him," White said during a UFC on FX 3 post-fight interview with Ariel Helwani. "Dude, nobody wants to fight this guy. We're trying to match the guy up with somebody, but he didn't mind fighting Brandon Vera, so he's fighting Brandon Vera. I don't want to sound like I'm disrespecting Shogun, because I'm not. I'm just telling the truth. It's verbatim what his people said when we talked to them. You know me. I tell it like it is. If you don't want that out in public, then don't say it to me on the phone, because I'm going to say what was said. Shogun's a warrior. The guy's fought everybody from PRIDE to the UFC. His last fight with Dan Henderson was awesome. It is what it is."
Now, Rua will fight Vera, whose last win was over Eliot Marshall. Before that, Vera loss a bout to Silva which was later turned into a no-contest because of a positive drug test for Silva. The Rua-Verabout will main event the UFC's next show on Fox.
Teixeira made his UFC debut at UFC 146 with an overpowering submission of Kyle Kingsbury. Who do you want to see him fight next? Speak your mind in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop's battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top -- though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn't necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11's case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we'd really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test...IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 07:30:00 EST. Lady Gaga's Health Worries Elton John

'She is frail, and she doesn't eat when she should,' John says of Gaga in new interview with The Guardian.

By John Mitchell

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/john_elton/artist.jhtml">Elton John</a> is concerned about his friend <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a>'s health, telling <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/jun/01/elton-john-interview-fatherhood-pnau?INTCMP=SRCH" target="_blank"><i>The Guardian</i></a> that Mother Monster's hectic touring and work schedule leave her "frail" and undernourished.</P><P>Perhaps more disconcerting is that John said Gaga's parents, to whom she is famously quite close, worry about her welfare as well. "I look at Gaga, and I think, 'How does she do it?' I talk to her mum and dad about it. They worry," he said.</P><P>"She is frail, and she doesn't eat when she should do, and she's a girl, and it's tougher for a girl. She works really hard," John continued. "She will be in Denmark one night and Saudi Arabia the next. I know how tiny she is, and I do worry about her, yes."</P><P>Gaga and John are so close that the music legend chose the "Born This Way" singer to be the <a href="/news/articles/1662501/lady-gaga-godmother-elton-john.jhtml">godmother</a> of his one-year-old son, Zachary. The pair have collaborated artistically multiple times, including a medley performance of their hits at the 2010 Grammys and on the duet "Hello Hello" for the animated 2011 film "Gnomeo &amp; Juliet." Gaga has said that the two <a href="/news/articles/1674731/lady-gaga-elton-john-duet.jhtml">will duet again</a> for her <a href="/news/articles/1686196/lady-gaga-new-album.jhtml">next album</a>, which she is reportedly working on concurrently with her "Born This Way Ball" Tour.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Lady Gaga Has The Title And Concept For Her Next Album" id="vid: 717202" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"My next duet, I believe, will be with Elton," Gaga told British talk-show host Alan Carr late last year. "I'm already working on my next album, and I played him a song that I wrote, and he really loved it. I don't want to give anything [else] away!"</P><P>John's concerns for Gaga's health are not without precedent. In January 2010, the pop star was forced to <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2010/01/15/lady-gaga-cancels-shows/">cancel a concert in West Lafayette, Indiana</a>, when she experienced shortness of breath and a rapid heartbeat backstage immediately before the performance was set to begin. After that frightening incident, Gaga canceled dates in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Wallingford, Connecticut, based on doctor's recommendations that she take time to recover from exhaustion.</P><P>Just two months later, Gaga appeared on the verge of collapse by the conclusion of a <a href="http://www.popeater.com/2010/03/16/lady-gaga-collapses/" target="_blank">"Monster Ball" show in Auckland, New Zealand</a>. Video from the performance shows Gaga sitting and even lying down during the final song of the evening, "Bad Romance."</P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></p>

?Find Friends Nearby?: Facebook?s New Mobile Feature For Finding People Around You [Updated]

Facebook has created a new feature that lets users find friends and potential friends nearby. CurrentlyInitially called "Friendshake" and also accessible through a URL that is the abbreviation of "find friends nearby" (http://fb.com/ffn), it's another step in Facebook furthering its reach into mobile, and creating services to meet new people -- rather than building up more connectivity with the ones you already know. And, in keeping with Facebook'semphasis on being as ubiquitous as possible, for now it's not being delivered in a native app, but via the mobile web. Update: it's accessible via Facebook's mobile apps, too (see below the break for more details, including comments from the developer).

The service comes a little under two months after Facebook announced the acquisition of Glancee, a mobile app that helps users discover people near them with similar interests, whose three founders have now joined Facebook and closed down their app. It is not clear if Friendshake has been created out of that acquisition, or if it has been developed along an altogether different thread -- or how the functions of the two may eventually dovetail.

Lil Wayne Explains His Latest Skateboarding Injury

'I broke my clavicle, like, two months ago,' Weezy tells MTV News at Atlanta's Birthday Bash.

By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX

Lil Wayne

Photo:

Lil Wayne takes his skateboarding seriously, so the Young Money cash king doesn't really mind the bumps and bruises that come along with the sport. Actually, Weezy describes it as "fun."MTV News caught up with Wayne on Saturday after he got offstage at Birthday Bash in Atlanta. Tunechi joined Kelly Rowland to perform their hit collaboration "Motivation," but instead of simply walking out to the crowd of 20,000 like the rest of the night's acts, Wayne rolled out onstage riding his board. Backstage, a shirtless Tune was riding around the Philips Arena, and those lucky enough to get close to him may have noticed a bright yellow bandage on his left shoulder."I broke my clavicle, like, two months ago. What happened was, I didn't go to the doctor when I broke it, so it healed on its own," Weezy explained. "Whenever you let a break heal on its own, it don't heal right, so I got a lot of bone callouses around it."So this tape keeps my bone from popping out of my skin," Wayne said, pointing to his shoulder with a childlike grin. "It's fun."This isn't the first time the multiplatinum rap god has injured himself while skating. Last August, Weezy had to get nine stitches after he took a spill in a St. Louis skate park. "The Lou was good, but I busted my fuggin head at the sk8park! 9stitches! Gnarly gash over my left eye! Luv the people," he tweeted after the fall.

Cagereaders rant about Jason Miller?s retirement, Brock Lesnar?s UFC 146 appearance and more

It's Reader Rants, when Cagereaders' opinions get center stage. They had plenty to talk about this week. Jason "Mayhem" Miller moving on from MMA, Antonio Silva's bloody face, Brock Lesnar's rumored return and Wanderlei Silva's comments about Vitor Belfort's broken hand all had tons of discussion on the Cagewriter Facebook page. If you want to be featured in a future Reader Rants, like Cagewriter on Facebook and comment on the stories that show up in your newstream.
Jason "Mayhem" Miller was dismissed from the UFC, and then he decided to retire. You all had very different views on him.
He's probably not worth the money he commanded. He's a recognizable face to put in against up-and-comers, but for a longtime veteran, that's probably not exactly what Dana White and co. are looking for. I've never had a problem with his walkouts and craziness, though. He's a showman. Put a camera on him in any situation and he likely to act crazy. -- John Wilcox
I think Dana has always had it in for him... Cut him after going the distance with GSP, when GSP was something special and finished fighters. His Bisping performance was terrible, sure but for Dana to call it the most lopsided fight ever is a joke. His performance against C.B. "lay and pray" Dollaway looked better on his feet than I've seen him in a while but blew out his knee. White has given other fighters much more of a chance than he gave Miller. I hope he's not done as I for one would love to see one last Miller-Kennedy fight. -- Will Howard
Cagereaders were moved by the large amount of blood in the Silva bout.
That doc should've stopped that fight. The ref should've stopped that fight. Dana and the fans got blood hungry in this match, and that kinda thing is what is keeping the UFC from becoming a more accepted sanctioned sport. -- Tobyus Sanchezo
Brock Lesnar's appearance at UFC 146 got tongues wagging, and as usual, the big guy inspired strong opinions.
He isn't an MMA fighter. He is a big dude who can push around smaller dudes. His skill level should be showcased to idiots who love fake wrestling. He don't deserve a UFC paycheck. -- Philip Erwin
Yeah, but make him earn marquee fights. Maybe put him as an early fight on Fox against someone like Nelson or Struve. -- Aaron Roy
I was surprised to hear this. I don't see him doing well. His intimidating aura is gone, and everyone knows if he gets punched in the mouth he's done. His size and speed can help him win against some guys, but I don't see him competing for the title again. -- Josh Farris
Wanderlei Silva ripped Vitor Belfort for breaking his hand and pulling out of UFC 147, which surprised Cagereaders.
Be upset if your opponent doesn't make weight, not breaks his hand in practice. Wandy must have been struck in the head too many times. -- David Feinblatt
This was a big fight in front of his countrymen. This was also his first fight in Brazil in 12 years, and I'm sure he wanted a big return. -- Sohrob Kohistani

Seidio Surface case for the HTC One X review

I do love the feel of the thin HTC One X in the hand. I also worry about how it would weather an unforeseen drop.    Putting a case on your HTC One X is probably a worthwhile thing to do. A decent case costs way less than “insurance” on your new device and it can also make your phone stand out a bit from the crowd. read more

This Playstation Move Sniper Rifle Is Your You're-Still-Not-Really-A-Sniper Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

Ah, snipers. They get the fancy gear, the camouflage and the headlines. I do not have the patience to be a military sniper. These guys are sitting in the bushes or in a building for hours sometimes without moving a muscle. They have to have an extreme attention to detail, and I'd imagine they spend more time studying wind current than they do firing bullets. Sniping in an FPS is absolutely nothing like sniping in real life, and I hate when people think otherwise. I mean, you do have to find an isolated spot on the map, you can't give away your position or risk losing it and you constantly have to watch your back. Still, it's absolutely ridiculous to assume sniping in a game is anything like the real thing. But this Playstation Move Sniping Rifle should certainly help convince you that it is! More »

Ronda Rousey and Sarah Kaufman?s bout now has a time and place

Ronda Rousey's first title defense is set. As reported by MMA Fighting, She will face Sarah Kaufman in San Diego on Aug. 18 in her first bout since winning the Strikeforce bantamweight championship from Miesha Tate in March.
Kaufman was expected to get the title shot before Rousey after beating Liz Carmouche last July. However, Rousey's string of fast armbar wins and her wise move of incessantly asking for the bout moved her to the head of line. Rousey won the belt with another armbar submission.
Now, she'll try to hold onto that belt in facing Kaufman, a tough striker with 10 of her 15 wins coming by knockout or TKO. Kaufman has just one loss on her record. She was submitted by former champion Marloes Coenen by an armbar, the exact move Rousey is so fond of. As an Olympic medalist in judo, Rousey knows how to employ armbars quickly. Four of her five wins came in under a minute.
Will Rousey hold onto her belt? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean outed in Google Play Store listing, 'coming soon' to Galaxy Nexus

Well well well, what do we have here. It seems that a possibly careless listing on the part of Google has just outed the next version of Android. It's outed as version 4.1, as Jell... -- we're going out on a limb here and saying Jelly Bean -- and more specifically, that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be the first phone to receive it. Wowzers.  So, we've all been assuming for weeks upon weeks that we'd be hearing something about the next iteration of our favorite mobile platform. It isn't the biggest surprise in either name or version number, but it is a little surprising it has been outed in this way.  So, are we going to see some sign of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean next week in San Francisco? As it stands, all signs would point to yes. Exciting times folks.  Via XDA, Droid Life

In what's sure to piss off most news readers and general web-perusing enthusiasts, Twitter has gone down. We've heard reports that it's been down for the last fifteen minutes, and without access to Twitter, it's tough to say whether or not the company has given any updates.

A quick visit to DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com shows that the site is down across the boards, and of course visiting Twitter.com offers up the same results.

Konstruct for iOS creates generative augmented reality art with your voice

If you have an artistic temperament, but you weren't blessed with steady hands or an eye for color, Konstruct might be the app for you. Not only does the iPhone app let you produce generative art using words, warbles and whistles, but it also uses augmented reality to bring your artistic creation to life.

To get started, you first need to print out the Konstruct marker and place it wherever you'd like to create your AR sculpture -- it could be on your living room wall, or on the floor of your bathroom, it doesn't matter. Open the app, point your iPhone at the marker, and start making some noises! Once you're done, you can save your creation, or simply wipe the slate clean and start again.

The volume of your voice affects the size of the shapes that are drawn on the screen, and you can move your head around to alter the path of your 'brush' -- but to change the shape of your brush or modify the color palette you have to use a menu. Without knowledge of the app's internal workings, it's hard to say what the actual difference between whistling, talking and singing is -- and judging by the developer's affinity for whistling in the demo video (after the break), the app probably doesn't perform that much analysis on your input.

Still, Konstruct is just a prototype! A later version could do away with menus and rely entirely on the location, tonality, quality and amplitude of your voice -- and judging by the the words of the developer, James Alliban, there is definitely more in store for Konstruct: "The idea of transforming entire cities into user generated virtual art galleries really appeals to me. I see Konstruct as an early prototype that will hopefully be realised in this form in the future."

Kenny Florian officially retires from MMA

Kenny Florian officially announced his retirement from fighting on Thursday. He had been contemplating walking away from the Octagon after a back injury. He walks away as one of the fighters who helped the UFC build to its current size.
Though Florian had three title shots and didn't win any, his career had plenty of highlights:
Cutting down to featherweight and beating Diego Nunes at UFC 131: After starting in the UFC at 185 lbs. and methodically working down to 155 lbs., the already thin Florian wanted a shot at featherweight and champion Jose Aldo. To get that shot, he first had to get through Diego Nunes, both to prove that he could cut down to 145 and that he could win at that weight. He did it, beating Nunes in a unanimous decision.
"I want BJ's belt!": Florian had one title shot against Sean Sherk. It was early in his UFC career, and he wasn't quite ready. With six straight lightweight wins, Florian had the credentials but it couldn't hurt to ask for it. After submitting Joe Stevenson in the first round, Florian said the phrase that was used in ubiquitous commercials: "I want BJ's belt!"
Stopping the Roger Huerta train at UFC 87: Heading into this fight, Huerta had a ton of hype surrounding him. He hadn't lost in the UFC and his most recent fight was a thrilling, comeback win over Clay Guida. If he won, he was expected to get a title shot. Florian wouldn't let that happen. He dominated Huerta for three rounds on the way to a unanimous decision.
TKO of Alex Karalexis at Ultimate Fight Night 1: After fighting at middleweight for "The Ultimate Fighter" and getting to the finals, Florian cut down to welterweight. Those Florian "Hellbows" helped him make a post-TUF mark. He made a huge cut across Karalexis' nose and won by TKO in the second round.
Now, the smart and articulate Florian will have more time to lend his voice and insight to the UFC's broadcasts on Fuel TV.

Demetrious Johnson beats McCall, gets shot at UFC?s inaugural flyweight belt

Demetrious Johnson took care of unfinished business at UFC on FX 3 in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night.
Johnson took the lead early by dropping McCall with a right hand halfway through the first round. McCall continually moved forward towards Johnson, but couldn't always land strikes when he did. Throughout the bout, Johnson's conditioning and footwork gave him an edge. He was able to move in and move out to land strikes, frustrating McCall throughout.
There was no scoring error this time as Johnson was announced the winner via unanimous decision. The judges gave it to Johnson 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28.
"It's about using my athletic ability and letting my mind go free," Johnson said about his performance.
The fight was a rematch after their March bout that ended in a draw. That fight didn't go to a fourth round to decide who would advance in the tournament because an incorrect score was announced.
The judges made a definitive, and correct, decision on Friday night. Johnson's win means he'll fight Joe Benavidez for the UFC's first flyweight championship.

Assimilate UK! The British Music Industry Now Controls Your Internet

One by one the UK's ISPs are falling to a creeping censorship of the web led not by some secretive government organisation but by the UK's music industry in the shape of the British Phonographic Industry, the British record industry's trade association. There is no democratic check on what's happening and little recourse left open to the average person.

In a nice piece of investigation, Zack Whittacker at ZDNet has unpacked what's happening before our eyes.

Not unlike SOPA, the U.K.'s antipiracy legislation, the Digital Economy Act, has a "three-strikes" system leading to Internet disconnections, but it's been put on hold for implementation until 2014. So to get around this delay, the music industry is going to the courts.
