Taylor Swift, Rihanna Dress To Impress At Billboard Awards

Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha, Selena Gomez also make fashion splash on red carpet, as showgirl style rules at the Las Vegas event on Sunday night.

By Jocelyn Vena

<P>On Sunday night, some of the biggest names in the music industry hit up the <a href="/news/articles/1664375/billboard-music-awards-recap-justin-bieber-selena-gomez-kiss.jhtml"><i>Billboard</i> Music Awards</a> in Las Vegas and decided that sparkles and sequins make for the perfect additions to any red carpet get-up. Well, it is Sin City after all. </P><P> </P><P><a href="/music/artist/swift__taylor/artist.jhtml">Taylor Swift</a> always seems to bring some of that Nashville sparkle to any red carpet. She arrived at the show in a pale-hued, sequined Elie Saab gown. <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/minaj__nicki/artist.jhtml">Nicki Minaj</a> showed off her signature sense of style in her baby-blue, body-hugging spandex Mark Fast catsuit. </P><P> </P><P><a href="/music/artist/gomez__selena/artist.jhtml">Selena Gomez</a> turned up the style dial in a sexy, cut-out black Dolce &amp; Gabbana gown that she paired with red strappy sandals with sparkly bow detailing. Like Gomez, <a href="/music/artist/_kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> opted for some cut-out detailing in her sparkly, slate-gray dress with tulle skirt. <a href="/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml">Rihanna</a> looked white hot in her men's tailored Max Azria suit, which she kept sexy and feminine by not buttoning her shirt all the way. </P><P> </P><P>Fergie went S&M chic in her little black bandage-type dress by Herv&#233; L&#233;ger. Nicole Kidman also wore black. She paired a casual braid hairstyle with a long black gown and Keith Urban. British pop cutie Kyle Minogue looked funky in her little black lacey dress. Inside the show, Britney Spears sat in the audience wearing a skimpy black dress of her own, her hair in loose curls, with little-to-no accessories. </P><P> </P><P>While some stars kept the color scheme low-key, Keri Hilson decided to stand out in her billowy little yellow dress paired with a turquoise-colored belt. Kelly Rowland showed off some of her best assets in a body-hugging, bright pink bandage dress. </P><P> </P><P>The fellas also looked tight on the carpet. Joe Jonas wore all black with white sneakers, Ne-Yo paired his periwinkle suit with a Yankees cap and Justin Bieber wore black tuxedo pants with a gold-lam&#233; tuxedo jacket. </P><P> </P><P><i>Which stars' styles caught your eye at the </i>Billboard<i> Music Awards? Android tablets running on Nvidia Tegra 3 to hit $200 this summer

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said in a recent interview that their recent cost reductions on the Tegra 3 processor will enable manufacturers to launch Android tablets with $199 pricetags, and that we'll see them as soon as this summer. As Huang explains, this can seriously lower the barrier for entry.  “We took out $150 in build materials, things like expensive memory. At $199, you can just about buy a tablet at a 7-Eleven.” $200 is a sweet price point, as proven by the success of the Amazon Kindle Fire, and now others, like the ZTE Optik, are trying to follow up. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more decently powerful Android tablets that also happen to be reasonably priced, but maintaining quality at those lower tiers is going to be a challenge.  read more

New malware appearing in dodgy apps you shouldn't be downloading anyway

The next time you're cruising one of the various Android app piracy forums looking for the free crack for ROM Manager or Root Explorer, be warned that you may get more than you're looking for. A new bit of malware named DKFBootkit has been found attached to pirated apps that require root. It hooks itself into the boot sequence by altering files in the system, and can cause all sorts of problems without the user being aware. Since you think it's a legit application, you say OK when it asks for root privileges, and you are owned. It's bad news all around. The good news is that it's easy as hell to avoid. That's the part of these types of stories that never seems to get mentioned. Use a bit of common sense -- you download a file from someone who is able to crack a legit app and defeat any license checks, and you don't think they can drop a bot or keylogger in there as well? Idiocy like this is what keeps malware alive on Windows desktops, and Android devices. Stop stealing apps, and don't be stupid enough to trust someone who steals and redistributes them. Period. Full stop. If you didn't pay for it, chances are you'll wish you did. And you deserve it.  More: NQ Mobile

Eric Prindle wins Bellator tournament title without a fight

Eric Prindle won Bellator's heavyweight tournament, which includes a $100,000 prize and a shot at Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad. Prindle did this without having to step in the cage for a rematch of his final with Thiago Santos.
How did this happen? In the latest of weird bumps in the road between the two competitors, Santos missed weight by 12 pounds. With Santos so far over the heavyweight limit of 265 pounds, the fight was called off, and Prindle was declared the winner of the tournament.
Last week, their fight was delayed after Prindle came down with the flu. In November, they met in the cage for their first attempt at a final. That bout was declared a no contest when Santos threw an illegal kick to Prindle's groin.
Prindle got to the final with a decision win over Abe Wagner and a 40-second knockout of Ron Sparks. He will now face Konrad at a later date to challenge for the Bellator heavyweight belt.

Google Drive screenshot hints at 5 GB of cloud storage for Android smartphones and tablets

Following up on rumors that Google would be offering a cloud service to access files and multimedia no matter what screen you're looking at, some pictures with details of Google Drive have emerged. Apparently Google Drive will be giving away 5 GB for free with the option to upgrade for more, and the source of this shot claims that it will be launching on April 16. Google Drive (or something like it) has been rumored for a long time; if this service is actually nearing a launch, it's taken its sweet time. Obviously Google already has a ton of cloud services already synced up with Android, but the only real file locker they've pumped out for Android is Google Music. Being able to wirelessly sync individual files between mobile devices and computers is bound to garner lots of interest, not because it hasn't been done before, but because Google will be able to feed it deeply into the Android OS and make it make it completely seamless. So, any of you already hooked up with sync services like DropBox - would you be willing to switch to Google Drive for the sake of something a little more native?  Source: TalkAndroid

Miley Cyrus: "Happiness Only Comes From Within"

She's been diligently keeping up with her fitness routine, and Miley Cyrus was back out on Thursday (March 29) for a Winsor Pilates class in Los Angeles, California.
The sporty 19-year-old was clad in an all-black ensemble as she grabbed up a post-Pilates smoothie before cruising away from the Melrose Ave. gym locale.
After having taken a break from social networking, Miss Cyrus is back to tweeting in full force - as she took to Twitter during the course of the day to offer up some words of wisdom.
The former Disney darling first posted a message reading, "If you take your happiness and put it in someone's hands, sooner or later, they will break it."
Further explaining the tweeted statement, Miley added a short while later, "Happiness can only come from inside of you & is the result of your love for yourself. You are responsible for your happiness."
On the career front, recent reports tell that Cyrus is working with Paramount Pictures on a Christian-based film about "a young woman?s broken promise to God."
A source told MileyCyrus.bz, ?There was a meeting for the film three weeks ago, a table reading two weeks ago and they?ve been working on the scripts for the film since the March 18, 2012."

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 15:30:00 EST. Color vulnerable to simple GPS hack, lets you spy on anyone, anywhere

Color, the $41-million-in-funding location-oriented photo sharing startup, is susceptible to simple GPS spoofing. With nothing more than a jailbroken iPad or iPhone, you can use FakeLocation to trick Color into thinking you're somewhere else. Within seconds you can be browsing photos that were snapped thousands of miles away. With a little digging, you can pore through photos not intended for your eyes.

Of course, such a hack isn't illegal as such -- every photo you take with Color is public. With FakeLocation you are simply circumventing Color's very limited location-oriented security mechanism. It does undermine Color's usefulness (and uniqueness), though -- if nefarious types can sit in their bedroom or basement and eavesdrop on classy dinner parties and wild night club soirees, people might be less inclined to share personal photos with those around them.

Fortunately, both for Color and its users, this is an easy security hole to plug -- at least in the short term. The app (or server-side) code simply checks to see if the user has 'teleported' an impossibly large distance, without any intermediate steps in between. In the long term, though, Color's users must be aware that its social graph is completely public. Color's users must realize that every photo they upload is visible by anyone, from any place.

After the break, just to elucidate a little on Color's actual business model and ultimate intention, we have two amazing quotes from Bill Nguyen, Color's founder.Continue reading Color vulnerable to simple GPS hack, lets you spy on anyone, anywhereColor vulnerable to simple GPS hack, lets you spy on anyone, anywhere originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 05:36:00 EST. 2012 IRTA MotoGP Jerez Test Day 1 Times, 1pm: Lorenzo Leads Pedrosa

The track is busy at Jerez for the first joint test of all of the MotoGP factory prototypes and CRT bikes together, and despite strong winds, all of the riders are out and hard at work. Times, though, are slow: Jorge Lorenzo is nearly a second and a half off the 2011 pole set by Casey Stoner, a natural result of the wind and the fact that this is the first morning of the test.
At lunchtime, it is Jorge Lorenzo who is fastest, just ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Ben Spies, with Casey Stoner a little further behind in 4th. Nicky Hayden is first of the Ducatis with the 5th fastest time, ahead of the satellite Yamaha of Cal Crutchlow and the second Ducati factory bike of Valentino Rossi. As expected, Randy de Puniet is the fastest CRT bike, the Frenchman just under a second and a half behind Lorenzo, but ahead of the two satellite Ducatis of Hector Barbera and Karel Abraham.

Fergie And Josh Duhamel Don't Want Kids 'This Second'

'But we want to have a family, so that is in the cards,' singer tells MTV News.By Christina Garibaldi

Fergie

Photo: MTV News

Now that Fergie has some extra time on her hands since the Black Eyed Peas announced they were on an indefinite hiatus, the singer is now focusing on the important things.
No, not working on a solo album or judging "The X Factor"; she's concentrating on spending time with her husband of three years, Josh Duhamel.

The "Glamorous" singer married the "Transformers" star back in 2009 after five years of dating, which, by Hollywood standards, is an impressively lengthy marriage. So what's their secret? Well, according to Fergie it's quite simple.
"We like each other, we like hanging out together, we have fun," Fergie told MTV News last week. "We have fun in the kitchen cooking and singing silly songs, not to give too much away, not going any further than that, but we have a good time together, and it's nice to get to have that quality time. We enjoy it."
Now that Fergie and Duhamel will be spending much more time together, many are wondering if they plan on starting a family. "It's not happening yet, I can tell you that definitely," Fergie said. "But we want to have a family, so that is in the cards, but it's just not this second."
In the meantime, Fergie is spending her downtime concentrating on her shoe line and fragrances and visiting her husband on set. "I got to go to his set for his movie that he's been filming, where he has the mohawk, 'Scenic Route,' " Fergie said. "So I'm very thankful for that film, for giving him a mohawk, because I'm quite enjoying it right now."
Fergie is no stranger to starring in movies of her own. The singer appeared in "Nine" and "Poseidon" and isn't ruling out the possibility of one day getting back on the big screen.
"I would love to," Fergie said of wanting to do another film. "It's going to be when I have the time and the energy and really have that commitment to something, but right now, I'm just enjoying the break. I'm open, I'm open for future things, I'm just planting my feet down. Eight years of being on the road, and now I've been off the road, what, five months? And I'm still traveling back and forth, New York, different places. I'm enjoying this time of just being home for that long of a period. But yeah, film definitely in the future, but like I said, no plans right now."
Do you think Fergie should do another movie? Let us know in the comments!

Auslogics Disk Defrag 3.2 gets smarter, faster

Auslogics Disk Defrag has been part of my system maintenance toolkit for quite some time. With the release of version 3.2, it's now even better at tidying up and optimizing your system's hard disk drives. In addition to a cleaner, easier-to-use interface, Disk Defrag 3.2 offers improved single file and folder defragging, better processing of multiple disks, a simplified scheduling screen, and more informative tool tips. Auslogics has also fine-tuned the program's defragmentation and file consolidation algorithms.

For laptop users, there's a new option to lock the program if your system is running on battery power -- so scheduled operations don't kick in and drain your power source at an inopportune moment. If you happen to have an SSD installed in your PC, you can head to the Disk Defrag options and exclude it from scanning (many think that defragmenting an SSD is a very bad idea).

Brett Cooper Talks Fighting in Bellator, Life in MMA Outside the UFC

by Michael David Smith

When Brett Cooper last stepped into the cage, it was for a five-minute, five-round fight for a championship in the Lords of the Cage MMA promotion. Cooper had prepared to fight for 25 minutes, but things didn't go quite as planned: He knocked Keith Berry out in just 10 seconds (video above).

"He came in real quick and aggressive, I countered him with a punch and it was over," Cooper said. "It was a strange moment because it happened so fast. It was bittersweet. But that's why you train hard, so things come easy in the fight. But I wouldn't have been disappointed if the fight would have gone more minutes."

For the 23-year-old Cooper, who will fight Alexander Schlemenko Saturday at Bellator 44 on MTV2, trying to make it as a full-time fighter outside the UFC sometimes means not wanting to win a fight too quickly: The experience of getting more minutes in the cage can be good for a fighter's development, and Lords of the Cage isn't exactly handing out six-figure Knockout of the Night bonuses, like UFC fighters can earn. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Frankie Edgar vs. Benson Henderson II is on

According to Dana White's Twitter feed, the muddled mess that is the lightweight title picture has been cleared up. After Edgar lost his championship belt in a decision to Benson Henderson at UFC 144, Edgar will rematch with current champ Henderson this summer. An exact date or event was not given, but the UFC has planned events for a pay-per-view July 7 and a Fox show on August 4.
Anthony Pettis and the winner of the upcoming bout between Nate Diaz and Jim Miller have been mentioned as possible contender, but Edgar is the winner. He pushed for the rematch in every interview that came his way. Edgar believed he deserved the fight because he had to rematch close fights twice.
But as Snoop Pearson said, "Deserve got nuthin' to do with it." The fight is good business. Edgar and Henderson's first fight was an exciting, five-round brawl. The rematch will draw more fans who heard about the first match-up. Whether it's on Fox or pay-per-view, a lightweight title bout will offer good TV.

Game Says Going Independent May Be A 'Really, Really Good Move'

Rapper's fifth LP, F.I.V.E., could be his last album with Interscope.By Rob Markman, with reporting by Felicia 'The Poetess' Morris

Game

Photo: MTV News

Game only has one LP left on his Interscope contract, and after he drops the follow-up to 2011's The R.E.D. Album, the platinum-selling Compton rapper will contemplate his musical independence.
"Independent. That seems like a really, really good move where I can capitalize off of all the finances being made off of my music for once. But, I don't know, I kinda like having a lot of help, a lot of assistance from a big label," Game told MTV News on Thursday. "I don't know, maybe we'll have a meeting about a lot of money or I'll be talking to my conscience."

Earlier this month, Game announced his new album title, F.I.V.E., to XXLMag.com, but it may be some time before it hits shelves. "I haven't even started working on it yet. I first came up with the album title, which is F.I.V.E., and then came up with its acronym, which is Fear Is Victory's Evolution," he explained to MTV News. "It's got a good concept, and once the budget is open on that I'll get to rolling."
Game, who was the subject of Thursday night's "Behind the Music" on VH1, is reluctant to offer up anything resembling a release date due to the multiple push-backs that he's experienced with The R.E.D. Album. "You what I learned from this last album is to never give anybody a date to anything; I'll let the label do that when it's time," he said.
On Wednesday, Game released his "The City" video with Kendrick Lamar. But it looks like that will be the last single he drops off of The R.E.D. Album. "Personally I'd like to just move on and get the budget open for my fifth album, which is something I don't think Interscope is too much in a rush to do, being that it's my last contractual, obligated album on the label," he said. "I would love to just keep it rolling."
Should Game go independent or stick with Interscope? Leave your comment below!

Petitions Are Going Viral, Sometimes To Great Success

Petitions have been a common form of protest throughout modern history, often bringing attention to a cause through little more than handwritten letters and word of mouth. But like a lot of other things, petitions are going viral. And one website in particular has contributed to the phenomenon.

?Rampage? Jackson unhappy with pay, wants to fight outside the UFC

From the department of biting the hand that feeds you, Quinton Jackson complained on Twitter about the UFC and said his next fight in the UFC will be his last.
"I feel sorry for my next opponent, no matter who or what it is," Jackson wrote via Twitter. "I will fight whoever they put in front of me ? I always have ? but it will be my last fight in the UFC. I have other things on my mind. I didn't say I would be done fighting; I just said I'm not fighting for the UFC (u fight cheap)."
Jackson's most recent salary information was from UFC 96 in 2009, where he made $325,000. It doesn't count locker room bonuses, sponsorship money or a cut of the pay-per-view. As a headliner, it's likely Jackson's contract calls for pay-per-view money.
To review, the UFC stood by Jackson as he went on a hit-and-run driving rampage, as he took a break from fighting to film "The A-Team" plus do all the publicity required for the movie, during the many times he treated media like a punching bag, and when he insulted their own color commentator and another fighter working as an analyst.
Before UFC 144, the UFC's doctor sent him to an age specialist, who gave him testosterone therapy and helped make him healthy enough to fight and enjoy himself more in the bedroom.
There are fighters who have a legitimate reason to be unhappy with their pay and treatment by the UFC. Jackson is not one of them.

Bjorn Rebney?s top five fights for Bellator?s upcoming season

Bellator's spring season starts on Friday with a featherweight championship bout between Joe Warren and Pat Curran plus four featherweight tourney bouts. Cagewriter caught up with Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney and found out which fights he's most looking forward to this season. Here they are, in no particular order, complete with Rebney's comments.
-- Joe Warren vs. Pat Curran on March 9 for the Bellator featherweight title: "Joe has so much at stake, and Pat has built such a resume fighting under our banner," Rebney said.

-- Ben Askren vs. Douglas Lima on April 6 for Bellator welterweight title: "It's kind of an old-school MMA match-up. You know exactly what Ben's going to try to do. It reminds me of the old days when you thought, I know. He's going to try to take him down and submit him. Ben's going to try to put him on his back, and Lima's going to try to stand and knock him out. He just made a couple folks' top 10, of which he is deserving."
-- Eddie Alvarez vs. Shinya Aoki on April 2o: "For obvious reasons. I'm a huge fan of Ed, and he's just jumping out of the frying pan into the fire with that one."
-- Megumi Fujii vs. Jessica Aguilar, which sources close to the bout say is May 18: "It's No. 1 vs. No. 2, and it's two wickedly talented women who rely on no spin, no promotion. They're just two women who fight at the highest level in the world and they're going to get to face each other."
-- Giva Santana vs. Bruno Santos on March 16 in the middleweight tournament: "Being a southern California guy, Giva Santana is a guy I followed for a while. He's an old-school guy who has deserved a shot on a big stage but because he's perceived as being one dimensional, because everything ends via armbar, he hasn't been given that shot. Him and his Santos fight. I never pick a guy because I always want everyone to have an equal shot but I look at a guy like that, and he really is reminiscent of the old-school guys. He's got a discipline that he relies on and believes it heart and soul, and it almost has a spiritual connection to it. His fight in the first round of the tournament because he's a terrific human being. This is his opportunity."

2012 IRTA Moto2 Jerez Test Day 2 Times - Luthi Still On Top, While Corti Leads Chasing Pack

Thomas Luthi continues to lead the Moto2 class at the IRTA test at Jerez, the Interwetten Paddock rider taking half a second off his best time from Monday to secure his spot at the top of the timesheets. Italtrans rider Claudio Corti leads Luthi's challengers, heading up a group of four riders separated by just over a tenth of a second. Marc Marquez once again confirmed his fitness, creeping up the timesheets into 3rd behind Corti and closing the gap to Luthi. Marc VDS Racing's Scott Redding set the 4th fastest time, just edging ahead of Pol Espargaro on the Pons HP Tuenti machine.
Conditions on day 2 were a little trickier than on the first day, the wind causing problems for a number of riders. Redding and Marquez both took a tumble at turn 10, but both walked away unhurt. Andrea Iannone also blamed the wind for the problems he's been having, last year's title challenger ending the day down in 22nd on Tuesday, nearly two seconds off the pace of Luthi. Riders once again took an early break, as they reached the daily mileage limits on their engines, meaning the track did not see much action in the late afternoon.
The teams return for the final day of testing on Wednesday, before packing up and shipping out for the season opener at Qatar on April 8th.

Bluetooth SIG embraces GNSS Profile 1.0 for GPS data sharing

Hot on the heels of a new Broadcom system that taps into the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in order to reduce first-lock times, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group has quietly adopted GNSS Profile 1.0 for GPS data sharing. According to Phone Scoop, the profile can be used by all devices boasting Bluetooth 2.0 and up, and it'll allow GPS-enabled products to share positioning data with another nearby product over BT. Specifically, "the GNSS profile specification defines the Serial Port Profile (SPP) based transport mechanism and associated service discovery record parameters needed to establish a service level connection between two devices," which should make GPS data sharing as easy as contact sharing of yesteryear. Practical applications? With a plethora of location-based social networking apps already on the market, we're certainly playing the wait-and-see game on this one.Bluetooth SIG embraces GNSS Profile 1.0 for GPS data sharing originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 22 Mar 2012 20:41:00 EDT. Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft's wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today's installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We've got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed -- and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We're also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio -- the game's actual publisher.

It's still early, of course, so it's entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple's legal eagles at bay.Windows 8 App Store images leaked? originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 10:00:00 EST. MotoGP Launch Season: NGM Forward Presentation At Jerez

While the Aspar team was making its presentation in Valencia, the Forward Racing Team took advantage of the heavy press presence at Jerez for the Moto2 IRTA test to launch its 2012 challenge in Moto2 and Moto3, in the spectacular setting of the VIP "saucer" which hangs above the circuit. The presentation got underway very late, as bad weather delayed Edwards' departure from the US, the Texan rushing straight from the airport to the track for the launch.
At the presentation, Edwards talked to the press about the state of development of the BMW Suter CRT project. The bike had made a lot of progress, though they were still a way from being 100% competitive. The electronics had improved a lot, he said, though the improved electronics had caused a recurrence of the chatter problem. The CRT machines were still outgunned, though, Edwards said. "The MotoGP bikes are a 50 caliber, and we're a 308," the Texan quipped.
Just how much different a less power-hungry circuit makes will be apparent from Friday, when all of the CRT bikes face the MotoGP factory prototypes at Jerez for the final test of the season.
Below is the NGM Mobile Forward Racing press release from the launch:

MotoGP Launch Season: Aspar Presents MotoGP CRT Team in Valencia

With the final IRTA test just a couple of days away, teams are seizing the opportunity to stage their team launches for the 2012 season. On Tuesday night it was the turn of the Power Electronics Aspar team to present their bike and riders to the press, not at  Jerez, where a large portion of the world's motorcycling press is already assembled, but in Valencia, home to Aspar owner Jorge Martinez and the heart of his power base.
Much is expected of the Aspar team. Randy de Puniet has been consistently fast on the Aprilia ART, though without the factory prototypes at the separate CRT tests, it is hard to judge just exactly how competitive the bikes will be. Going by the times set so far, De Puniet should be capable of troubling the satellite bikes, at least the Ducatis of Karel Abraham and Hector Barbera, as well as the Honda of Stefan Bradl. Aleix Espargaro makes a return to MotoGP after a reasonable year in Moto2, but having already had experience on a MotoGP with Pramac Ducati in 2010 should help get the Spaniard up to speed.

Google holds back on open-sourcing Honeycomb, heralds massive shift for Android

Google, in an interesting but not entirely unexpected twist, will not be open-sourcing Android 3.0 Honeycomb for the foreseeable future.

Historically, Android is usually open-sourced via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) a few days or weeks after the code is finalized. While this departure from the norm won't affect OEMs like HTC and Motorola that have access to internal builds of Android, small-time developers will likely have to wait months before rolling their own distributions.

As to why Google is holding back Honeycomb, its reasons are actually rather rational. Honeycomb, while originally intended to run on all mobile form factors, is only ready for deployment on tablets. "To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made some design tradeoffs," says Andy Rubin, the head of Google's Android group. "We didn't want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones. It would have required a lot of additional resources and extended our schedule beyond what we thought was reasonable. So we took a shortcut."

In other words, Google wants to prevent OEMs and homebrew developers like Cyanogen from rolling their own smartphone versions of Honeycomb -- it doesn't want to see the same bitter-tasting tabletified bastardization that occurred with Android 2.1 and 2.2 last year.Continue reading Google holds back on open-sourcing Honeycomb, heralds massive shift for AndroidGoogle holds back on open-sourcing Honeycomb, heralds massive shift for Android originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 07:00:00 EST. Google Chrome now uses SPDY HTTP replacement, halves page load time

We're not entirely sure of the time line here, but it looks like Google has now rolled out the SPDY HTTP replacement to its full bevy of Web services, including Gmail, Docs, and YouTube. If you're currently using Google's Chrome browser you're probably already using SPDY.

We originally reported on SPDY way back in November 2009, when Google introduced it as yet another experiment in making the Web faster, like Go, Native Client and speculative pre-connections. Over the last 18 months, though, SPDY support has found its way into the stable build of Chrome.

SPDY is basically a streamlined and more efficient version of HTTP. At its most basic, SPDY introduces parallel, multiplexed streams over a single TCP connection -- but at the same time, SPDY allows for prioritization, so that vital content (HTML) can be sent before periphery content (JavaScript, video). All in all, the SPDY protocol can halve page load times, which is obviously rather significant.

The best bit, though, is that SPDY is an open-source project. HTTP 1.1 is a lumbering beast that needs to be replaced before low-latency real-time computing really becomes a reality, and SPDY is one of the best options currently on the table. To be honest, we're not sure why SPDY hasn't received more coverage -- it's awesome in every way. At the moment, though, the only way to help speed up SPDY's proliferation, is with an experimental Apache mod.

As far as actually 'trying it out,' your best bet is downloading Chrome, hitting up some Google sites, and then checking chrome://net-internals to see your active SPDY sessions. SPDY is a transparent replacement for HTTP, though, and as such it's rather hard to see its effects. Google's sites definitely feel fast in Chrome, but there are more technologies than just SPDY at work.Google Chrome now uses SPDY HTTP replacement, halves page load time originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 07:00:00 EST. by Michael David SmithaJay Hieron won a very close split decision victory over Rick Hawn Saturday night, taking the Bellator Season 4 welterweight tournament title.

The fight easily could have gone to Hawn, and one judge said it should have, scoring it 29-28 for Hawn. The other two judges scored it 29-28 for Hieron, who credited his training for getting him into the kind of shape he needed to be in to win three fights in Bellator's eight-man welterweight tournament.

"I just train my butt off, man," Hieron said. "No matter what's going on, I'm in the gym sweating." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Gresini CRT Shakedown Comes To An Early End

The San Carlo Gresini Honda team have called an early halt to their shakedown test of the FTR Honda CRT bike Michele Pirro will be contesting the MotoGP series with this season. On the second day of testing, Pirro ran into a problem with the belly of the fairing grounding at certain sections of the track, according to GPOne.com. After trying to address the problem via setup, it became clear that physical changes to the bike would be needed and the Gresini team decided to call it a day.
Such problems are normal for such a new bike, Fausto Gresini told GPOne.com. The very reason for holding a shakedown test is to find problems such as these, he said. Solving them in time for the Jerez test due to start on Friday will be difficult, however. British chassis builder FTR, who built and designed the chassis and bodywork for the bike, have just a few days to modify the bodywork to prevent it from grounding, and it is unclear whether they will be able to fix the problem by Friday.
