Joe Lauzon's banner can 'ear' you just fine

DETROIT -- Don't accuse Joe Lauzon of not having a sense of humor. The fighter, who is taking on George Sotiropoulos at UFC 123 at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Saturday, included a not-so-subtle tribute to his well known ears on his sponsor banner.

'Rampage' (finally) suffers a definitive loss

There will never be answer to who really won last night's main event at UFC 123. Some favor Quinton "Rampage" Jackson while others liked the Octagon control exhibited by Lyoto Machida. Jackson took a split decision win from the Brazilian. He stated several times that he was lucky to win and even said Machida deserved a rematch. The good feelings continued until Rampage arrived back home in Los Angeles. That's when he decided to take on his manager Anthony McGann. Jackson got nailed playing bag tag and went for a ride.

On Tuesday, Miller Motorsports Park organized its final teleconference of the year with the stars of the World Superbike championship. This time, it was the turn of Max Biaggi to talk, and he fielded questions from the press on a range of subjects, from the role of electronics in World Superbikes, on the development of the Aprilia RSV4, on his thoughts on retiring, and on the prospect of a return to MotoGP. Here's what Biaggi had to say:

IMDb for Windows Phone 7 reviewed, very yellow indeed (video)

As one of the highest-rated and most-downloaded WP7 apps, IMDb might just be the most popular yellow app in the world. It's a nice yellow, though, a golden, orangey tone. Anyway, I digress: IMDb for Windows Phone 7 is excellent. It provides, with a couple of flicks, everything a film buff might need.

In the video review (after the break), I take a quick stroll through each of IMDb's main features. If you set your location, you can see the movie screening times at local cinemas. Like the IMDb website, the app's prime focus is on exploring the details of movies (and TV shows), and the app certainly doesn't disappoint in that regard; the app might actually be better than the website! You can watch trailers, browse cast photos, check out related news -- it's fast, easy and pretty.

In many ways the app mirrors the website. You can browse the top 250 films, the bottom 100, the winners of the Best Picture Academy Award, this week's top movies and TV shows... and so on. It's so good in fact that, from now on, I'll be using the app instead of the website.

The only flaw with IMDb for WP7 is that you can't book cinema tickets directly. As far as I'm aware, not even Flixster for WP7 -- IMDb's chief rival -- offers this functionality. Needless to say, the first movie app to offer such a feature will decimate the competition.

The video review is after the break.Continue reading IMDb for Windows Phone 7 reviewed, very yellow indeed (video)Filed under: Video, Windows MobileIMDb for Windows Phone 7 reviewed, very yellow indeed (video) originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST. Internet Explorer 9 preview 7 available, takes SunSpider crown; Beta now downloaded 13 million times

As of a few moments ago, you can now download Platform Preview 7 of Internet Explorer 9. The main focus of this update is the continued enhancement of the Chakra JavaScript engine; as a result, IE9 now leads the SunSpider benchmark by a few percent.

Like its predecessors, this preview lacks any kind of useful UI -- but if you have the Beta installed, you can follow Lee's guide to hack the Beta UI onto the preview. The Beta, incidentally, has now been downloaded over 13 million times. We're not seeing significant use of IE9 amongst Download Squad readers, but with almost 4% of Ed Bott'z ZDNet readership using IE9, there's definitely some evidence of its growing popularity. With my sources indicating a January release of IE9, Microsoft really ought to release a second beta...

Anyway, in infinitely more exciting news, there's a bunch of cool new HTML5 demos on the Test Drive site to play around with! Shakespeare's Tag Cloud is very cute (and educational!) Galactic, on the other hand, is an excellent example of the 'Open Web' 3D games that we can expect to see next year. It also acts as a very good benchmark tool -- I may have to do another head-to-head browser shootout!

Update: I just tested IE9 on the 'real world' Kraken benchmark... and it beats Firefox!

Another update: The IE Blog has been updated with more information about Preview 7.Filed under: Microsoft, BrowsersInternet Explorer 9 preview 7 available, takes SunSpider crown; Beta now downloaded 13 million times originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST. Rampage Jackson Worries Lyoto Machida Will Give Him a Boring Fight

by Michael David SmithWhen a UFC fighter goes on SportsCenter two days before his fight, he's usually expected to try to sell the viewers on a fight that he guarantees is going to be a "brawl" or a "barn burner" or a "slugfest" or whatever other word you want to use to describe the kinds of fights that will make the casual MMA fan watching ESPN buy the pay-per-view.

That's not what Rampage Jackson did on Thursday morning.

Instead, Jackson went on SportsCenter and described his fight with Lyoto Machida Saturday night at UFC 123 as one that could easily be boring. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Usher Shows Off Fancy Footwork At AMAs

Swedish House Mafia join Ush for an electronic mash-up.By Jayson Rodriguez

Usher's protégé, Justin Bieber, scored more hardware than the "OMG" singer on Sunday night (November 21) at the 2010 American Music Awards, but the veteran superstar was far from a step behind the teen sensation.
With his fleet footwork, Usher teamed up with dance-world superstars Swedish House Mafia to ignite the stage with a mash-up of his "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" and their "Miami 2 Ibiza" and "One" that certainly qualified as one of the evening's high points. Decked out in black military garb and sporting a starter mohawk, Usher partied and pranced around onstage to his club-happy single.

"I feel like a zombie gone back to life," Usher sang. "Hands up, and suddenly we all got our hands up/ No control of my body/ Ain't I seen you before?/ I think I remember those eyes, eyes, eyes, eyes."
Usher and his gang of dancers showed off moves that would have tripped up teen stars. At one point, his backup dancers launched him into the air and Usher landed and jumped right into his next step.
A full explosion followed behind him and he carried the energy into the hook.
" 'Cause baby tonight, the DJ got us falling in love again," he crooned. "Yeah, baby tonight/ The DJ got us falling in love again/ So dance, dance, like it's the last, last night of your life, life."
After picking up an award earlier in the evening, Usher acknowledged his veteran status. The 32-year-old thanked his supporters, plugged his OMG Tour with Trey Songz and shouted out longtime fans. "I been doing this 18 years," he said.
What did you think about Usher's performance? Tell us in the comments!

Chris Cornell Filling In For Robert Plant On Led Zeppelin Tour? That's News To Him

'I have not been approached to fill in for Robert Plant on the Zeppelin tour, but that isn't to say I won't be,' singer says.By Chris Harris

Chris Cornell

Photo: MTV News

Former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell has spoken out for the first time about rumors that he's been asked to fill in for Robert Plant on a proposed Led Zeppelin reunion tour. The trek would feature original guitarist Jimmy Page, original bassist John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham taking over on drums for his late father, John Bonham.
Cornell has been mentioned — along with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar, White Stripes mastermind Jack White and Alter Bridge's Myles Kennedy — as a potential Plant fill-in. Plant has already said that he wouldn't take part in the tour.

"I have not been approached so far to fill in for Robert Plant on the upcoming Zeppelin tour, but that isn't to say I won't be," Cornell told MTV News. "I've heard that from about 200 people now, and it might be one of those situations where it's just an online rumor or it might be true. But if you see anyone from Led Zeppelin around, let me know. I think I should actually fill in for Jimmy Page on the Robert Plant/ Alison Krauss tour."
Cornell's denial comes just a day after Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford confirmed reports that frontman Steven Tyler recently met with Zeppelin for an impromptu jam session. "They did it for fun," Whitford said during an appearance on the syndicated show "Todd N Tyler Radio Empire." "I actually think Jimmy wanted Steven to come over and play a little bit because I think he was trying to light a fire under Robert."
Rumors of a Zeppelin reunion tour have abounded since the iconic band played a single reunion set last year at London's O2 Arena. Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider added fuel to the fire last month when he revealed that the group was thinking of touring, with or without Plant.
According to Snider, the rest of the band told Plant, " 'We're all rehearsed, we're ready to go. Here's a gazillion dollars on the table. If you don't do it, we're going out with this kid [Myles Kennedy].' "
"And he can sing the sh-- out of Zeppelin," Snider added. "They're going to hope that Robert, at the last minute, will go, 'OK,' and step in."
In a recent interview, Jones told BBC Radio Devon that a new singer was being sought to take over for Plant. "We are trying out a couple of singers," he said. "We want to do it. It's sounding great, and we want to get on and get out there."
But Jones insists that he, Page and Bonham aren't interested in finding a Plant clone. "It's got to be right," he said. "There's no point in just finding another Robert. You could get that out of a tribute band, but we don't want to be our own tribute band. There would be a record and a tour, but everyone has to be onboard."
Of course, even if Zeppelin were to approach him, Cornell might be too busy to take over vocals for the band. His upcoming Timbaland-produced solo LP, Scream, will be released within the next few months. Cornell told MTV News last month that some of his fans might consider Scream something of a departure, but he doesn't see it that way.
"It makes me happy that there's this perception that I have a group of fans that I'm now sort of throwing a curve at and what their reaction will be," he said. "But I've been in this situation so many times already. When I put out [1999's] Euphoria Morning, my main goal was to create an album that sounded like nothing I'd done in Soundgarden, and I did that. I also had that with Temple of the Dog, where I showed up with songs that weren't necessarily riff-based. And then, of course, the pairing of me and members of Rage Against the Machine had everyone sort of speculating about what that would sound like.
"It feels like I've done this so many times that when it's presented to me as being a departure, I feel that's a misconception," he added. "I feel like that's my theme at this point."

UFC 122 sub of the night: Siver thrills German fans

Dennis Siver is built like a mini-Mike Tyson so it should surprise no one, that he likes to stand and bang. Andre Winner also likes a good scrap. So when the duo decided to square off in the middle of the cage and flail away, there was no way the match was going to decision. Siver ate some great punches from Winner. When he landed his own big counter left, Winner hit the floor. Siver jumped on top, unleashed a nasty set of punches and took the back of the stunned Brit. Siver pulled off a nifty choke submission at 3:37 of the first round. Siver - a Russian, who moved to Mannheim, Germany when he was 17 - sent the 8,204 in Oberhausen into a frenzy. The spectacular stoppage from Siver (17-7, 6-4 UFC) got him the submission of the night bonus good
for $60,000. He's also earned himself a step up in competition his next
time. Don't be surprised if Siver is a regular on the televised portion
of several cards in 2011. He's an action fighter, who can potentially
produce highlight reel finishes each time out. It might surprise some to hear that this was Siver's 10th fight in the UFC. He's been a hidden gem mostly fighting on the non-televised portion of the UFC's European cards in 2008 and 2009. With this win and the upset of UFC veteran Spencer Fisher back in June, he's now posted a big close to 2010.Winner, the runner-up in the lightweight class on Season 9 of "The Ultimate Fighter," is at a crossroads. His hand speed is awesome but he just hasn't been able to get on a roll and establish himself as a player at 155 pounds. After two straight losses, Winner is now just 2-3 with the promotion.

UFC 122 weigh-in: Return to Germany marks another chapter in bold international plans

The last time Spike television and the UFC decided to show UFC 120 on a tape-delayed basis in the United States, many fans were irked. The frustration was inflamed when ESPN decided to reveal the results on the bottomline newswire/scoreboard before the show hit U.S. television setsGet used to it folks. It's going to be the same tomorrow for UFC 122 in Germany and commonplace in 2011 when the promotion looks to double the amount of international events we saw this year."I think definitely in the next few years that there's a real prospect that
we're going to be running more and more events that you might not see live on
U.S. television, or even close to live," Marshall Zelaznik told USA Today. The UFC's managing director of
international development added that the promotion is planning for up to eight shows around the world in 2011."I think that we can really see ourselves hitting our stride in the next five
years internationally, that we can see our percentages (of UFC's) overall
revenue increasing twofold," Zelaznik said. "If we effectively double what we're doing now
internationally over the next five years, it's going to be a massive number for
the company overall."The plan for the first quarter of next year calls for shows in Sydney, Abu
Dhabi and possibly Dublin. Further down the road, UFC officials expect an event
in Scandinavia and possibly Italy. UFC eventually could find itself running
parallel circuits around the world.Zelaznik (pictured on the far right) said UFC 122 is within 1,000 of a sellout of 9,400. UFC 122 weigh-in (Courtesy Bloody Elbow): Spike television Nate Marquardt (186) v. Yushin Okami

Beyonce Inspired By Michael Jackson, Lauryn Hill For New Album

'I'm mixing every type of genre that I love,' singer says of follow-up to I Am ... Sasha Fierce.By Jocelyn Vena

Beyoncé

Photo: MTV News

Recently Beyoncé revealed that she wants to make her "own genre of music" for her next album. So when MTV News caught up with the singer at the New York screening of her concert special, "I Am ... World Tour," we asked her to clarify what exactly it is that she's creating in the studio.

"Well, I wouldn't say I'm inventing a new genre," she said. "I'm mixing every type of genre that I love and I'm inspired by every type of genre."
Beyoncé went on to say that people should throw any preconceived notions about the follow-up to 2008's I Am ... Sasha Fierce out the window. "I'm not in a box," she said. "It's not R&B. It's not typically pop. It's not rock. It's just everything I love all mixed together in my own little gumbo of music."
The singer says that quite a motley crew of musicians have inspired the album. "Definitely Fela Kuti, the Stylistics. How random, right?" she laughed. "So many people ... Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, of course, Michael Jackson's Off the Wall ... all of those things I'm kind of mixing together."
For the album, Beyoncé has been hitting the studio with many of her usual collaborators including Ne-Yo, Sean Garrett and Jim Jonsin. And her mom, Tina Knowles, has given the tracks she's heard so far her seal of approval, saying, "Of course [I heard it]. It's amazing. It's so amazing!"

Ke$ha Says Rihanna 'Meant Absolutely No Offense'

'I'm so used to the media flipping my words around,' singer tells Complex.By James Dinh

Pop-star rivalry has been around for years. Whether it was Britney vs. Christina or Mariah vs. Whitney, there's always been an underlying competition between your favorite female pop singers. But don't expect any animosity between today's stars, at least not from Ke$ha.
The wilding-out singer, who's the latest Complex cover girl, spoke with the magazine about her pop-star peers, including Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.
"I actually think that's cool," the singer said of the female stars she's being compared to. "Out of that group of chicks, I'm the new bitch on the block, so I'm still getting used to being compared to some of the biggest pop stars in the world, but I don't take any offense to it.
That just means people know my records."
Earlier this year, Ke$ha teamed up with Rihanna for the Barbadian bombshell's girl-power trek, the Last Girl on Earth Tour. Despite the duo's pairing, the blogosphere went into a fury when Rihanna recently revealed that she "didn't want the generic pop record that Ke$ha or Lady Gaga or Katy Perry could do."
The party-loving pop star admitted that she hadn't even read the quote, suggesting that the media may have taken Rih's comments out of context.
"I'm so used to the media flipping my words around that I'm sure she meant absolutely no offense to me or Katy or Gaga," said the singer.
"Rihanna and me are totally cool, we were just on tour together, and I know that she and Katy are good friends. I don't take any offense because I'm sure it's bullsh-- anyway."
Based on the garbage-bag ensemble she wore to this year's MTV Video Music Awards, it seems that Ke$ha could care less about other people's opinions. "I was trying to look super-hot," she said. "I like to poke fun at when people make fun of me, because I don't take myself that seriously. People say I'm 'garbage chic,' so I thought I'd take it to the next level and make a garbage bag super f---ing chic — and I succeeded!"
As for now, the singer is focusing on her recently released Cannibal, a companion album to her debut, Animal.
Do you think there's competition between any of today's pop stars?
Share your thoughts below!
Open the floodgates! It's Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Stick with MTV News for everything you need to know about the brand-new music.

Mila Kunis "Looked Disgusting" After Losing 20 Pounds

Mila Kunis had to drop a whole lot of weight for her newest role -- and after dieting down to 95 pounds, she had seriously mixed feelings about her body.
To play a professional ballerina in Black Swan, Kunis had to mimic a real dancer's tiny physique. The already-skinny actress spent five months losing 20 pounds for the role. When she looked in the mirror, she said, she didn't recognize herself.

"I had no shape, no boobs, no a**. All you saw was bone," Kunis, 27, tells E!. "I was like, this looks gross."

While Kunis swears she looked "like Gollum from Lord of the Rings" in person, she was shocked to realize that her skinny figure looked fantastic on film.

"In real life, it looked disgusting. But in photographs and on film, it looked amazing," she admits. Seeing how normal her unhealthy figure looked onscreen, Kunis says she had a new understanding of "why this industry is so f***ed up."

At least Kunis had a legitimate reason for losing so much weight: Ballerinas are required to be a very specific body type, one that's unnatural for most women. (As a result, eating disorders are common in the world of professional ballet.) Her costar Natalie Portman also dropped a lot of weight; director Darren Aronofsky literally asked her to lose as much as she could without getting sick. That's a pretty serious request, and both actresses say that they made sure to stay as healthy as possible on their very restricted diets.Still, Kunis said, the people close to her got worried about her extreme new body.
"My mom freaked out," Kunis says. "Everybody started panicking. She was like, 'You have to promise this isn't going to affect you.'"

Just as she promised her mother, Mila went back up to her normal weight after the shoot was over. So how long did it take her gain back the pounds she spent five months losing? She tells E! that it all came back in five days.
So next time you find yourself comparing your body to some movie star, just remember what kind of crazy diet roller-coaster they have to go through!

Do you think Hollywood actresses are too skinny? Chime in below!

PeerBlock 1.1 arrives with some important updates

PeerBlock is a great way to keep unwanted P2P connections (as well as advertising and spyware) from getting through to your Windows computer, and it's just gotten better with the release of PeerBlock 1.1.

Among the key additions are a completely revamped installer (complete with a signed driver), an updated list manager for easier settings tweaks, and a list verification feature to prevent file corruption. The signed driver is an important addition, since it makes the installation process much easier for users of 64-bit Windows. PeerBlock has also switched from the PeerGuardian blocklists to iBlocklist.com, which the developers say are much faster and more reliable. There's also an option to display allowed connections -- though you should expect an additional hit on your CPU if you switch it on.

La Boite Concept LD120 is the hi-fi desk your laptop's been crying out for (video)

Why more people aren't doing this kind of thing, we don't know. La Boite Concept, a French design studio with a focus on electronic acoustics, has put together the above piece of laptop-loving music furniture, dubbed the LD120. It features a total of seven drivers, including a down-firing subwoofer and a stereo pair at the rear, the latter of which is intended to bounce sound off a wall and neatly into your ear canal. You'll still only be getting 2.1 audio output at the end of it, but when it emanates from a leather-trimmed desk equipped with its own USB sound card and a cable-tidying channel in one of its legs, we're kind of willing to overlook that little detail. We only wish we could be as blasé about the price, which at €980 ($1,300) places the LD120 strictly on our "hope someone buys us one" list.

Alicia Keys, Usher and Drake lead the list of nominees for the 2010 Soul Train Awards, it was announced on Monday (October 18).
New mother Keys and Usher are tied for the most nods with four apiece; Keys is up for Best R&B/Soul Artist Female, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Record of the Year, while Usher is up for Best R&B/Soul Artist Male, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Dance Performance.
Drake is just one nom behind the pace-setters. The Toronto lyricist scored nods in three categories: Best Hip Hop Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Record of the Year.
Nicki Minaj, Ne-Yo, B.o.B Erykah Badu, Monica, Sade and Fantasia are among the other big nominees, each scoring two nods apiece. This year's Legends Awards recipients are veteran singers Ron Isley and Anita Baker.
R. Kelly is set to open the show, hosted for a second-straight year by actor Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. Rick Ross, Cee-Lo and Keyshia Cole are among the acts scheduled to perform. The 2010 Soul Train Awards are set for November 10 at Atlanta's Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre and will air November 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on BET and Centric.
Last year marked the return of the seminal awards show, founded by "Soul Train" creator Don Cornelius, after a two-year hiatus. The 2009 production also took place in Atlanta and featured tributes to Chaka Khan, Charlie Wilson, L.A. Reid and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds.

Mercedes To Become Ducati MotoGP Team's "Official Car Partner"

That the marriage between two of the strongest brands in Italy, Valentino Rossi and Ducati, should turn into a marketing goldmine comes as no surprise. Even before Rossi's signing with Ducati was officially announced, rumors among paddock insiders suggested that Ducati had sponsors lining up to back their MotoGP program, and now that the new season is approaching, Ducati is starting to pick the fruits of that.
For yesterday, at the Los Angeles Auto Show, AMG - a high-performance subsidiary of the Mercedes Benz brand - announced that they are to enter into a marketing partnership that will see the German car manufacturer support Ducati's MotoGP project. The partnership will not produce much in the way of visible sponsorship on the bikes, for Mercedes is to be "Official Car Partner" to the program, rather than any form of main sponsor. The pair will engage in joint marketing activities, including allowing selected Mercedes owners to test ride Ducati's new Diavel machine at AMG events, while selected Ducati owners will be given the opportunity to test Mercedes vehicles.

Afghan War Reaches a Milestone and Keeps Going

Tony Karon, TimeOn Saturday Nov. 27, the United States and its allies will reach a grim milestone: they will have been in Afghanistan a day longer than the Soviet Union had been when it completed its 1989 withdrawal. What's more, the U.S. announced during last weekend's NATO summit that it intends to spend at least four more years, and possibly longer, in the Hindu Kush. Even then, many Afghans — perhaps even the president installed by the U.S. invasion — appear to doubt that the Americans will succeed where their erstwhile Cold War nemesis failed.

Angry Birds Day, Dec 11 ? Something Big Planned For London

By now you will have heard about the first official Angry Birds Day when lovers of that crazy iPhone/Android game come together to celebrate the ongoing war between the birds and the pigs. However, well placed sources told us yesterday that something big was going down on that day, specifically in London's Trafalgar Square. Now, this is becoming a big venue to launch big games, especialy console games. Here's the spectacular Halo Reach launch with guys in JetPacks earlier this year.

There is speculation that Angry Birds for Windows Phone 7 will be anounced on the day. There is also speculation that the game's developer, Rovio Mobile, will launch a games console version or that it will spin out a movie. Actually personally I think that maybe, just maybe, something different is going on. Here's why.

Love and Other Drugs Movie Preview

Which movies are fun for the whole family and which ones are treats just for you? Find out!
In theaters now...
Love and Other Drugs
Short Story:
Pharmaceutical sales rep Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a winner in the bedroom and in the office, until, one day, he meets his match in the carefree Maggie Murdock(Anne Hathaway). Neither one wants to be bogged down by romance. Ironically, what they don't want turns out to be something they both can't resist: Love. Based on Jamie Reidy's memoir "Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman."

What They're Saying:
"Finally, after years of suffering through Hollywood's predictable pap, sentimental mush, boring bromances and mean girl clichés, comes a love story that is actually worth falling for..." - Los Angeles Times
"Some of the heart we hope for in a good romance, those lump-in-the-throat moments, may be missing. But Gyllenhaal and Hathaway have great chemistry." - Orlando Sentinel
Good For Kids?
There's a lot of lovin' in this flick; too much for the kids to handle.

Watch the Preview!
Burlesque
Short Story:
Christina Aguilera plays a small-town girl (Ali) who, after venturing to Los Angeles, lands a waitressing gig at a local theater.
The Burlesque Lounge, although known for it's over-the-top performances, has seen better days. But as Tess (Cher), a retired dancer and owner of the venue, struggles to keep things afloat, Ali finds her niche in the close-knit Burlesque community. Ali soon discovers that her talents stretch much further than the bar, and with a push from her new friends, she takes to the stage. Surprisingly, the burlesque novice opens to rave reviews -- and cutthroat criticism.
What They're Saying:
"It's entertaining enough, like watching a celebrity workout film with a plot. But never once is it believable. Really, the movie should last 30 seconds." - Boston Globe
"It's more hallucination than story, but hey, If you think of it as a slightly deranged long music video divathon it can be a lot of fun." - Chicago Sun-Times
Good For Kids?
Kids will be entranced by the singing and choreography, even if the plot sails right over their heads.

Watch the Preview!
Tangled
Short Story:
Tangled is a comical take on the classic kids' tale, "Rapunzel." When the kingdom's most wanted bandit Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi) hides out in a mysterious tower, he's taken hostage by Rapunzel (Mandy Moore), a captive beauty who just so happens to have 70 feet of magical, golden hair. The two soon strike up an unlikely alliance that embarks them on an adventure-filled journey.
What They're Saying:
"Tangled braids strands of traditional storytelling and a contemporary sensibility with stylish if predictable results." - USA Today
"A Rapunzel retelling could have become just a retread of the studio's past princess tales, but this genuinely charming, chintz-free story does something new: It takes the time to chill out, as its heroine might say." - New York Daily News
Good For Kids?
Who could resist this comical take on a classic children's book?

Watch the Trailer!
Faster
Short Story:
Ewan McGregor narrates this documentary about the MotoGP Championship and the fast-paced world of Motocross.
What They're Saying:
"If you consider hurtling along at insane speeds inches from the asphalt to be a tad eccentric, the riders of MotoGP may just fit the bill." - Los Angeles Times
"Problem is, after an hour and a half of Faster, I still don't get motor sports." - Denver Post
Good For Kids?
This documentary may lose your child's interest Faster than you can blink.
In case you missed...
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I
Short Story:
Harry, Ron, and Hermione team up once again in this seventh installment of the Harry Potter series. Determined to defeat the evil Lord Voldemort, Harry must win the race against time and destroy the Horcruxes -- that is, if he can find them.
What They're Saying:
"Lumbering and gripping by turns, and suffused with a profound sense of solitude and loss." - Variety
"The story-within-the-story regarding the deathly hallows is visualized by way of shadow-puppet style animation, and the effect is quite beautiful." - Chicago Tribune
Good For Kids?
Magic and Hogwarts make for the perfect kiddy concoction.
Watch the Preview!
The Next Three Days
Short Story:
Russell Crowe stars in this drama, which follows a husband and wife as their life is flipped upside-down when the wife is accused of murder.
What They're Saying:
"The Next Three Days refuses to puff up its action with message-movie sermonizing." - Slant Magazine
"What was briskly diverting in the original has been rather laboriously overworked, and the film's attempt to draw out the moral stakes never addresses the material's basic, surface-level implausibility." - Variety
Good For Kids?
Although full of suspense, The Next Three Days does not contain the sort of adventure that keeps a child occupied.

Quinton Jackson humble in victory, irks his boss Dana White

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Dana White have some personality similarities. It's probably why the fighter and UFC owner bicker quite often. They both say what they feel and there isn't much of a filter. Jackson won a narrow decision over Lyoto Machida at UFC 123, but was stunned when the announcement was made. Just seconds earlier, he was getting punched in the grill and losing the third round. His reaction added to the controversial nature of the decision and it didn't please his boss. "Me and Rampage are getting along OK, but he pisses me off again," White said at the UFC 123 postfight press conference (2:15 mark -- video). "I had Rampage winning that fight two rounds to one. I scored that fight for Rampage. Rampage is slumping down and raising the other guy's hand and acting like he lost. I thought he won the fight." It didn't seem like Jackson did anything wrong. After escaping with a tight decision win, it's pretty rare for a fighter to show that kind of honesty and class. Forty-five minutes later, when Jackson entered the presser, he was in apology mode."I'm sorry man. I had just gotten done getting punched in the face a couple times," Jackson said (7:52 mark). "Don't pay me no mind."When I was in the fight I had a one-track mind, you know knockin' him out. In the third round, when he dominated me so much, I forgot what happened in the first two rounds. ... It's one of those things, at the time I thought I got my ass whooped because I was just getting up off the ground and he [just] ran a flurry up on my face." That seems plausible. Jackson was probably a little stunned. With all the adrenaline flowing right after a match, fighters are speaking with raw emotion. White looked at the entirety of the fight and liked what Rampage did over 15 minutes. "That's not the fight I saw. He definitely put on that burst where he landed five or six punches and definitely rocked him. You don't win a fight off four or five punches," said White. Scoring is very subjective. Some judges, media members and fans like Octagon control and counterstriking. Others favor the man pushing the action. Compustrike backed the judges and White. Jackson outlanded Machida 59-38 in a fight that spent 12:28 of 15 minutes on the feet. "Rampage was the aggressor. He moved forward the entire fight. Everytime Lyoto would go with that leg kick, he'd fire and go after him," said White. "I 100 percent had Rampage winning the first two rounds and had the third round going to Machida. Again, nobody gives a [expletive] what I think, but I'm not a judge. But that's how I scored the fight." In the seconds following the fight, Jackson said several times that Machida deserved a rematch. White emphatically shot down that idea (6:10 mark). "No, no," said White when asked about Rampage-Machida II. "As far as I'm concerned, and apparently as far as the judges are concerned, Rampage won that fight."White then repeated his displeasure of Jackson's postfight behavior. "Rampage is in there raising [Machida's] hand, slumping down, acting bummed out, acting surprised when he won," White said. "He won two rounds. It's a three-round fight. He won two of them." With White in his presence during the presser, Jackson made sure not to repeat the rematch offer. "This ain't my show. I don't own UFC homey. I just fight here," said Jackson (8:30). Jackson also revealed that he almost had to back out of the fight after coming down with a stomach ailment he'd caught from his kids. "Dana's always been there for me. Even if we don't see eye to eye all the time," Jackson said (9:40 mark). "I just couldn't tell Dana 'I cant make this fight because I'm sick.' He probably would've cussed me the [expletive] out." Jackson comes out a big winner from this fight. He didn't complain about Machida's counterstriking style, as so many others have done. Fans who thought it was a boring fight should listen to Jackson when he says Machida is a beast. Jackson's reaction probably saved the Brazilian's reputation a bit too.

Social browsing with Mozilla Labs F1 -- how RockMelt should've been

Mozilla Labs has just let loose the next stage in browser empowerment: F1. In one fell swoop, with just a single add-on, F1 brings social sharing to Firefox. With F1 installed, it's just a matter of clicks to share a site with Twitter, Facebook or Gmail.

The F1 button, which works in Firefox 3.6 and 4.0, sits in the top right corner of your browser, next to the search bar. The first time you use it, you need to authorize any (or all) of the three services. After that, you simply hit the F1 button, select a sharing service, and hit share. In case you were wondering, hitting F1 on the keyboard doesn't work -- that still brings up the Firefox help pages, alas. There's a video of it in action after the break.

It's painfully simple and stunningly effective. Sharing services like AddToAny and ShareThis have been deprecated by a 35 kilobyte Firefox add-on. F1 is faster, more convenient and unfailingly secure -- and this is just the beginning! While it only supports Facebook, Twitter and Gmail for now, Mozilla Labs talks about an API that will allow social sites to hook into Firefox; in theory, F1 could support any and all sharing services, all from within the browser.

This is the beginning of the end for the 'Share' block that hunkers like a hairy, unkempt baboon beneath each and every blog post on the Web. It really makes you wonder what exactly RockMelt spent 10 million dollars and two years of development on. F1 was probably developed in less than a week by a couple of Mozilla Labs code foxes.Continue reading Social browsing with Mozilla Labs F1 -- how RockMelt should've beenSocial browsing with Mozilla Labs F1 -- how RockMelt should've been originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 18:00:00 EST. Android?s App Store For Pornography, MiKandi, Adds Support For Paid Applications

Yes, as Steve Jobs likes to point out, Android has at least one third-party App Store that is dedicated to pornography and other 'adult' content. No, it doesn't have anything to do with Google ?it's made by a company called MiKandi (NSFW). And while it draws plenty of snickering and sneers from the Apple faithful, it capitalizes on a fact of life: a lot of people watch porn. And some of them are willing to pay for it.

Today, MiKandi has released a new version of its adult app store. The company says that it's been rebuilt from the ground up, and it also includes one major new feature: support for paid applications. Previously MiKandi apps have been free; now developers will be able to generate revenue through a channel other than advertising.

15+ free Windows apps to help you tackle Thanksgiving tech support

The holiday season has always been a time for gathering -- but in recent years, it's also been a time when family and friends come bearing gifts of computer troubles. Their computer friends -- people like the Download Squad team and you, our readers -- get asked to do everything from installing RAM upgrades to the annual computer tune-up. We're happy to oblige, of course, because there's a decent chance someone will pay us in beer or baked goods. Cash is welcome too, but never seems to be offered quite as readily.

To make your holiday tech duties a bit easier, I've put together a list of some of my favorite troubleshooting apps for Windows.
Where download links for the files aren't on the application's main page, I've included a link to the appropriate download page. I've provided a handful of FileHippo links as well -- they're an excellent mirror site and they don't surround download links in advertisements or "recommendations."

Malwarebytes (MBAM)
My favorite malware removal tool gets the first spot on the list because, well, it's the first app I turn to when cleaning up troublesome computers. The free version of "target="_blank">MBAM works miracles, and it's definitely worth recommending the paid version -- which does automatic updating and scheduled scans -- to friends who can't seem to keep out of trouble.

If you can't get the updater to grab current definitions on your system, download Malwarebytes definitions manually. The file I've linked won't be as current as what MBAM would download, but it's better than no update at all.
[FileHippo download]

SUPERAntiSpyware
Another great, free tool for cleaning up malicious software is SUPER. I find that its scans take longer to complete than MBAM and that SUPER tends to not find as many malicious files -- but it does find files MBAM doesn't. Think of running MBAM + SUPER as the "double tap" for malware. [download page] [portable download]

TDSSKiller
Lately I've been dealing with an awful lot of the same infection, and TDSSiller from Kaspersky seems to be the secret sauce for getting rid of it. It's designed to eradicate a specific (and nasty) rootkit family, and scans complete in a hurry -- so I've made it a permanent part of my malware checking routine.

PCDecrapifier
Once you've obliterated the malicious software on a computer, it's time to tackle the crapware. It's especially commonplace on new systems, where OEM PC manufacturers like to do us a favor by pre-installing trial versions of 30 apps we're never going to use. PCDecrapifier takes care of a lot of the heavy lifting here -- saving you the hassle of having to click through every uninstaller in add/remove programs.
[download page]

Revo Uninstaller
There are, of course, some apps which just don't want to leave without making a stink. Broken installers, missing .INI files, and botched registry entries can all make removal difficult. Revo is a great back-up tool in cases like these, and it's able to uproot even the most troublesome apps.
[download page] [portable download]

CCleaner
This trusty app recently updated to version 3.0, and it's better than ever. CCleaner is a fantastically simple way to remove loads of un-needed files from a system -- everything from Windows temp files to bits cached by Web browsers and Flash.
[download page] [portable download]

WinDirStat
If -- after running CCleaner -- you're looking for a way to free up even more space on a hard drive, give WinDirStat a go. It's a free app which will analyze the contents of a drive and show you which folders are hogging all those precious gigabytes.
[download page]

Easus Partition Master
I see a lot of laptops with a totally full C: and a totally empty D: -- many people don't know that the manufacturer has split their drive in two to help preserve their data in case they run a system recover or reformat and re-install Windows. When I encounter this scenario, I'll fire up Partition Master, combine both partitions, and whammo! They've got loads of free space on the only drive they had any idea was usable.

Note: partitioning tools can, of course, be extremely dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. You can wipe out loads of important data with a single key press if you're not paying attention -- so always exercise great care when using any tool like Easeus!

TeamViewer
Not everyone who wants your help lives conveniently nearby. Some might not want to bring you your computer, and sometimes you just don't want to get out of your chair to go fix someone's busted homepage. TeamViewer lets you troubleshoot from the comfort of your home -- just have your friend run the host on their machine and provide you their ID and password, and you're in. It's available for Windows, Mac, and Linux -- so you can help out regardless of who's running which OS.

Dropbox
Another great way to help friends remotely is with Dropbox. Get them an account and add them to a group -- it makes for a pain-free way to deliver files like installers and manuals you wish they'd read to their system.

Secunia PSI
Sometimes people don't want to believe what you're telling them -- they need to see something "official." If you're having trouble getting someone to understand the importance of updating, let Secunia take a look at their system. The app looks for all kinds of vulnerabilities in both Windows and installed applications like Java, Adobe Reader, and iTunes.

Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast 5, Avira
Never walk away from a freshly-cleaned system without making sure it's got a good, up-to-date antivirus / anti-malware application installed. MSE, Avast 5, and Avira are all great options -- and they're all free for use on home computers.

MVPS.org Hosts File and Sunbelt ClearCloud Anti-malware DNS
Another great way to help ensure systems don't become repeat offenders is by blocking access to websites which are known to cause problems. The hosts file, of course, needs to be copied on to each machine you want to protect. Sunbelt's ClearCloud service can be configured either on a system or on a router -- which makes protecting a whole house full of computers a breeze.

Nokia research lab builds touchscreen made of ice

Chances are this is one research project that won't find its way into a phone, but Nokia's research lab in Tampere, Finland has come up with a rather unique new type of touchscreen display: one made of ice. Of course, there are a few other components involved -- namely, a projector and an array of near-infrared cameras that are connected to a PC -- but it is technically a multitouch display made of ice, and that's got to count for something. For Nokia's part, it says that while the project is a "playful experiment," it does show that "interactive computing interfaces can now be built anywhere." Head on past the break to check it out in action.Continue reading Nokia research lab builds touchscreen made of iceNokia research lab builds touchscreen made of ice originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 20 Nov 2010 11:37:00 EDT. Lady Gaga has notched another milestone on her road to global pop-culture domination. The 24-year-old singer was recently named one of Forbes magazine's World's 100 Most Powerful Women list alongside CEOs, heads of state and media phenoms like herself.
Gaga took the #7 slot on the list, which was unveiled Wednesday (October 6), behind women such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and first lady Michelle Obama, who was named the most powerful woman on the planet (and is the first African-American to top the list). Gaga was the second-most powerful entertainer in the rankings, coming in behind Oprah, who clocked in at #3.
Other powerful ladies include Gaga's "Telephone" collaborator Beyoncé (#9), talk-show host and former "American Idol" judge Ellen DeGeneres (#10), author and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (#16) and screen siren and activist Angelina Jolie (#21).
Gaga is no novice when it comes to Forbes shout-outs. In June, she debuted at #4 on the magazine's 2010 Celebrity Power List, due to her cash-magnet Monster Ball Tour, $62 million in earnings, Web popularity and deals with companies such as Polaroid and MAC. B was bumped two spots to #2 after raking in $86 million from her world tour, arsenal of endorsement deals and House of Deréon products. Oprah has been a Forbes mainstay, coming in at #1 this year on the Celebrity Power List after ceding the crown to Angelina Jolie the year before. The mogul snatched the top spot back with a nine-figure payday and media conglomerate that includes TV shows, magazines and more.
Perhaps Gaga will wield her hefty worldwide clout to push for her causes. A longtime gay-rights supporter, the entertainer has most recently waged a campaign for the repeal of the U.S. Armed Forces' polarizing "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
What do you think of Gaga making the Forbes list? Sound off in the comments!

UFC 123 post-fight notes: Penn leaving career in White's hands

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- B.J. Penn had lost his past two fights as a lightweight, but scored a 21-second win as a welterweight. Penn said he isn't sure where he wants his career to go next."For first time in my career, I'm going to make Dana make the call on my weight," Penn said. White laughed and said, "It took 10 years!"-- George Sotiropoulos is leaving Detroit as a big winner. Not only did he beat Joe Lauzon, he won an $80,000 Fight of the Night bonus with Lauzon, and was already given his next bout. White announced that Sotiropoulos will fight Dennis Siver at UFC 127 in Sotiropoulos' native Australia.-- The other $80,000 bonuses were given to B.J. Penn for Knockout of the Night and Phil Davis for "Submission of the Night."-- White was not happy with the judges decision on the Tyson Griffin/Nik Lentz decision. Though Lentz was given the split decision, White said that "Tyson got [expletive]."-- Though Quinton "Rampage" Jackson asked for an immediate rematch, White shot that notion down, saying that Jackson won that fight. Jackson said that he is leaving his career in the UFC's hands."I don't own the UFC, homey. I just fight here," Jackson said. -- Jackson walked out to the theme song for Pride, the now-defunct Japanese promotion where he made his name as a fighter. He used it to remember the energy of the crowd, and how he used to fight for honor when he fought in Pride. -- Phil Davis said that his unique submission is going to be called the "Mr. Wonderful."

Who will coach the next 'Ultimate Fighter'? We have suggestions

After his fast beatdown of Takeya Mizugaki on Thursday night, Urijah Faber brought up the idea of coaching on "The Ultimate Fighter." Wanderlei Silva and Alan Belcher have both asked for the chance to coach on the show then fight each other. Why not grant these fighters their wish? Faber/winner of Dominick Cruz and Scott Jorgensen: A lighter-weight season of "The Ultimate Fighter" would introduce the casual UFC fan to this group of small but talented fighters. Starting off with Faber makes sense, as he is an already well-known fighter and can bring fellow WEC veterans and Team Alpha Male members Joseph Benavidez and Chad Mendes with him. With Cruz, the UFC would get an already brewing rivalry, and with Jorgensen, Faber would face off with a fighter he helped get in the business. This season would then lead to the bantamweight title bout. Faber already said he's up for it, but no moves can be made until after the Jorgensen/Cruz bout happens in December. Wanderlei Silva/Alan Belcher: Silva is an MMA legend and has a world of experience to share with a new crop of fighters. He is also one of MMA's most entertaining and likable personalities. (Follow him on Twitter for proof.) Belcher is an exciting, young fighter who would match up well with Silva in the cage. He would also tap into the coaching think tank at Roufusport, currently one of the hottest camps in MMA. Winner of Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard/Winner of Ben Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis: This season could build heat for the undisputed UFC lightweight title. No matter how the bouts shake out, you have four exciting, skilled fighters from great camps. Who doesn't want advice from Renzo Gracie, should Edgar win? Or learn to kick from Duke Roufus, should Pettis win?Cain Velasquez/Junior dos Santos: This season could serve as a pre-cursor to their UFC heavyweight championship. They would both bring in excellent coaches and teach their fighters well, but neither seem comfortable in the spotlight.Who would you like to coach the next season?
