Google offers updates for Google+ this holiday season, fruitcake en route

If Google's idea of a stocking stuffer is tweaking Google+, its engineers are getting the gift-giving over with a few days early. Today, the company announced that it'll be introducing a few new features to its social network, including new controls that adjust how posts from a given circle are blended into the overall stream of posts, along with which posts are highlighted for your attention. The outfit also says it's working on refining its toolbar to highlight newer posts and see how widely your posts have been shared. For advertisers, up to 50 named managers can now administrate a Google+ Page, and a fix to the photo side of the site allow for improved navigation and better tagging. Head past the break to see full clips of the changes in action, and since Google bought out Santa's operation, expect to hear Eric Schmidt's footsteps on your roof come the 24th.

Update: The Google+ Android app has also seen an update tonight, gaining the ability to start a hangout from a Messenger conversation, new photo album design and more. Hit the Android Market for more details.Continue reading Google offers updates for Google+ this holiday season, fruitcake en routeGoogle offers updates for Google+ this holiday season, fruitcake en route originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 21:23:00 EDT. PSA: Western Digital and Seagate commence bonfire of the warranties

Seagate and Western Digital really do have the spirit of the holidays running through their veins, as both companies are slashing the warranty periods on hard drives for the new year. Gone are the days of five-year safety periods, instead owners of Seagate's Barracuda XT, Constellation 2, ES.2 and Momentus XT drives will have three years protection. SV35 Series and Pipeline HD drives have two years while Barracuda, Barracuda Green and the 2.5-inch Momentus get a measly one year.

Western Digital on the other hand, will be hacking a year off the Caviar Blue, Green and Scorpio Blue drives that ship after January 1st, each coming with just two years warranty. On the upside, you'll be given the chance to extend the package for a modest fee -- nothing like the odd nickel-and-dime to hasten the post-holiday slump, eh?

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

A leaked early version of RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won't get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer -- only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that's really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There's no guarantee this app hasn't been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.Continue reading BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leakBlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 08:00:00 EST. Griffin says his Twitter warning was a warning for everyone

Miguel Torres is gone. Let's hope it's a short stay in exile.
If he returns to the UFC, it won't erase what's gone down on Twitter with the fighters and it certainly doesn't mean that a future blow up isn't right around the corner. Managing verbal gaffes on Twitter will be an ongoing challenge for teams, sports and fight promotions.
Forrest Griffin, who sort began the whole Twitter flap with his rape joke/commentary last month on Twitter, says it really shouldn't be that difficult for the fighters to police themselves.
"You should know. You kind of should know. You have a feel for it. For me, it was like a three-hour thing. Three hours before anyone said anything to me, I realized 'I messed up. I shouldn't have said that,'" laughed Griffin. "Someone once said. Twitter is like internet porn, once it's out there, it's out there and there's no getting rid of it."
Griffin joined Stephan Bonnar in the FoxSportsRadio920 studios on Sunday to talk about the current state fighting in the Octagon and outside. Bonnar gave his take on what happened to Griffin, Rashad Evans and then Torres.
"It's one of those things where Forrest said something and everyone got mad. And it's like a little slap on the wrist for Forrest. Then Rashad said something, everyone got mad. Then it was like 'dammit you guys I warned you once.' Then Miguel said something, okay 'we need to make an example somebody.'"
Griffin suggested Torres should've known by then that any sort of sarcastic/joking tweet referencing rape was off limits.
"That was kind of the warning for me, was the warning for everyone. Don't do it. Just stop. It's not perceived well," Griffin told the MMA Fight Corner radio show.
The former light heavyweight champ still likes Twitter because it provides a good forum for discussions.
"I like to say things that are not necessarily inflammatory, but also kind of make you think a lot," said Griffin. "[...] My whole thing is I never meant to hurt people who've been hurt by that. I'm not the kind of person who'd want to hurt people who've been victims of a horrible crime."
Both Griffin and Bonnar appreciate the fact that the UFC has never censored the fighters, but they've definitely gotten the fact that Twitter can be a dangerous place with a fine line to walk.
