2011 Le Mans MotoGP FP2 Result: Stoner Blitzes The Field Again

Casey Stoner has once again blitzed the MotoGP field at Le Mans, topping the second session of free practice by four tenths of a second. But Honda's iron grip on the field at Le Mans slipped a little: Repsol's Stoner led, with San Carlo Gresini's Marco Simoncelli in 2nd, and Stoner's teammate Dani Pedrosa in 3rd. But it was a Ducati crashing the party in 4th position, Marlboro rider Nicky Hayden found a burst of speed in the final minutes, leaping up the timesheets to set the 4th fastest time, just ahead of Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo, while the third Repsol Honda of Andrea Dovizioso was the last man inside a second of his Australian teammate, just over nine tenths slower than Stoner.

Behind Dovizioso, the gaps were incredibly tight. From Colin Edwards in 7th to Randy de Puniet in 11th, there were 5 riders who set a lap time of 1'34.9, including Hiroshi Aoyama, Valentino Rossi and Ben Spies. Cal Crutchlow was the last rider inside of one-and-a-half seconds of Stoner, the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha rider making it despite a crash in the latter stages of practice.
